Amazon.co.uk Review

Wingspan could be the collection that finally gives Wings the respect that they've long been due. Some people are wary of Wings simply because knocking them is the done thing. Others are dubious because they've actually tried listening to London Town or Red Rose Speedway all the way through. It's a truism that without a vociferous writing partner, Paul McCartney's sense of quality control could be rather lax, but it's easy to overlook how many fine tracks he and Wings produced from 1970 to 1983, the period covered on Wingspan. Compiling 40 of them on a two-CD set is a smart move--it allows you to purchase pretty much every post-Beatles McCartney song you could ever possibly want, all at once. The hits crowd together on the first disc, while the second cherry-picks album tracks and oddities; forget the inevitable "Mull of Kintyre", let "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Waterfalls" and "Back Seat of My Car" remind you of just what Paul McCartney could always do when he tried. --Taylor Parkes

So Paul has finally got around to properly showcasing his solo Beatles material. Here's the good news...for those of you who never want to hear the Frog Song ever again...the tracks that killed Macca's reputation are for the most part jettisoned off this release - subtitled Hits and History.

I've heard a sampler and the tracks all sound fresh and much much better sounding than the versions currently available on CD. I think they might have been processed rather than remixed, but they do sound excellent.

So what's on here? There are a handful of tracks each from McCartney and Ram - easily Paul's best 2 solo albums with many tracks to rival anything from his Beatles days.

Maybe I'm Amazed, Every Night, Back Seat of My Car, Uncle Albert, Junk all feature, followed by all the great singles from Wings - like Hi Hi Hi, C Moon, Band on the Run, Jet, Junior's Farm, My Love, Silly Love Songs etc etc.

There's also a splattering of album tracks - which has always been Paul's strong points.

No Give Ireland Back to The Irish (embarrassing), No Mary Had a Little Lamb (toe curling) but suddenly you hear a track like With a Little Luck and think "this isn't bad at all"

The selection runs right up to the mid 80s when Paul was a huge solo star. These CDs omit the cheesier end of his repertoire - Ebony and Ivory, Once Upon a Long Ago etc.

Instead rediscover great tracks like Tug of War, Goodnight Tonight and some later period Wings which were, gosh gosh, quite good!

The worst ommission is the title track fo 1978's London Town LP - it would have fitted nicely onto Abbey Road.

Best tracks? Waterfalls (Macca's great lost Beatles track), C Moon, Back Seat of My Car, Band on the Run, With a Little Luck and Maybe I'm Amazed. Wings were the ultimate "poison chalice band". Nothing Paul could do would have been allowed to be as good as the Beatles (and in truth Wings wasn't) but Wings were not as bad as you remember them. Anyone who bought The Beatles 1, John Lennon Legend should also own this.

When the Beatles split up Lennon said upset fans should have put one track of his, one of George's, one of Paul's and of Ringo's onto tape.

You'll find plenty here to put on that tape.

This is just one prong of a beautiful piece of marketing - the CD, the documentary, the proposed book. In an age where nostalgia is rife, a lesser talent could be accused of leaping on the bandwagon, but no, this is a gem. The whole CD brings back to me that warm fuzzy feeling of originally discovering the individual tracks on LPs as I grew up. Plus the project provides a nice snapshot of McCartney's family life, which is a credit to him and Linda. If you're new to Wings, buy the CD and listen to it a few times before you judge it - this is no disposable Britneypop! Before long you'll find yourself humming Junk, Tomorrow and Every Night on your way to work.

A fantastic collection of some great material. Sure it has its dodgy moments..(Mull of Kintyre still annoys me) but on the whole, an excellent buy. To be honest, my favourite CD is the 'History' selection. The songs are less familiar but better listening for it. You forget how good tracks like 'Venus and Mars Rockshow' or 'Bluebird'are. Its a shame it didn't cover some of the more recent McCartney releases (the most recent track is 1984) but I guess that leaves the option for a more up to date collection in the future.
