Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Wingspan could be the collection that finally gives Wings the respect that they've long been due. Some people are wary of Wings simply because knocking them is the done thing. Others are dubious because they've actually tried listening to London Town or Red Rose Speedway all the way through. It's a truism that without a vociferous writing partner, Paul McCartney's sense of quality control could be rather lax, but it's easy to overlook how many fine tracks he and Wings produced from 1970 to 1983, the period covered on Wingspan. Compiling 40 of them on a two-CD set is a smart move--it allows you to purchase pretty much every post-Beatles McCartney song you could ever possibly want, all at once. The hits crowd together on the first disc, while the second cherry-picks album tracks and oddities; forget the inevitable "Mull of Kintyre", let "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Waterfalls" and "Back Seat of My Car" remind you of just what Paul McCartney could always do when he tried. --Taylor Parkes

CD Description
The 40 tracks included here, cover the period from McCartney's 1970 eponymous debut solo album, to 1984's 'No More Lonely Nights'. Whilst the first disc includes the hit singles, the second one is a compilation of Wings and solo album tracks from this period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wingspan - Far From Flying De Coup..., 20 Sep 2001
By A Customer
An interesting but in-conclusive perspective thus far of this music great combining a history of his musical genius with some extras added on. However, because two of my McCartney favorites from Venus And Mars did not make this compilation, I would not be arranging an honest appraisal by giving a five star rank. Spirits Of Ancient Egypt, Medicine Jar, Magneto And Titanium Man and Letting Go all, in my opinion, have character and ingenuity only an ex-Beatle could muster up over the years. However, because they did not find themselves rung through the millions of cash registers world-wide and didn't find themselves on Billboard's Top 10 would no doubt explain their omission from this Hit CD. Had they been included, my Venus & Mars CD would have been moved to a drawer somewhere as Wingspan would be given to its replacement. Venus And Mars/Rock Show and Listen To What The Man Said have been included on this collection as well as Maybe I'm Amazed, all of which are not present on my other McCartney compilation, Wings Greatest. Other respectable song demonstrations of course also have been included in this recent package, however I always have honored McCartney more for his earlier solo contributions to the 70's-early80's Rock era as opposed to later accomplishments in his career. Although, needless to say he has done some great works in recent years including his spectacular contribution to the London Symphony Orchestra. As such, I still easily give this CD anthology 4 stars not only for Sir Paul's attempt to give the public an update on his R `N R works in general but also because of the more appropriate and generous price it has been offered to the public for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massively under-rated, 13 Oct 2003
As I'm a teenager whose (almost) 50-year-old Dad owns almost all the Beatles LPs, it's very hard to think of Paul McCarteny as someone who 'rocks.' But I love the man - he's quite clearly a songwriting genius, without doubt the best singer-songwriter ever, and he proves with this album that Wings have produced songs of Beatles standard. Although they often take some getting used to, almost every track is a gem, with songs like 'Venus and Mars/Rockstar,' 'Helen Wheels' and 'Daytime Nighttime Suffering' being included on the 'History' CD (ie not Hits... how?). Personally, Paul is my favourite Beatle, so it was no surprise to discover that Wingspan, although more 'pop-like,' can match up to many of the Beatles' songs. I could list all the great songs, but it's far easier to name the bad ones - Lovely Linda and Tug Of War. Because I don't mind Mull of Kintyre.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Band the Beatles could of been", 11 Oct 2003
By rarterton@excite.com (Northampton, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
It seems fashionable nowadays to knock McCartney for his post-Beatle efforts but with the arrival of 'Wingspan' things could be about to change.

For the first time on cd, the greatest hits and best of Paul McCartney and Wings is collected together. Such classics as 'Another Day', With A Little Luck', 'Live and Let Die' and the brilliant 'Maybe I'm Amazed' are all to be found on here. It goes without saying that 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is the greatest Beatle song they never did and, in my opinion, far superior to Lennon's Imagine.

Interestingly, McCartney has chosen to include some of his own personal favourites under the heading 'History'. It's on this cd that the less obvious, but just as good, songs are found. 'Back Seat of My Car' is an amazing song, as is Nineteen Eighty Five, a song which has found a new generation of fans when used on Dom Joly's Trigger Happy TV.

I could recommed this album to fans of The Beatles because, although I don't agree with Alan Partridge when he says "Wings are the band The Beatles could of been", I think they are the next best alternative.
