Wings of War is a game series that merges card and board game mechanics to recreate aerial combat. The first series of Wings of War games focus on the "knights of the air" age, World War I, portraying the abilities of the fighting planes of this period.
Wings of War: Famous Aces is the first set of the WWI collection. It includes five types of planes: the Spad XIII, Albatros D Va, Sopwith Camel, Fokker Dr1 and the Sopwith Triplane. Each one was flown by an ace: Baracca, von Richtofen, Rickenbecker, Fonck, Olieslagers and Baker.

I wouldn't describe this game as a toy, as it holds appeal to an older audience. Having said that, it is a game that one could happily sit down and play with younger players. The rules are easy to grasp, allowing plenty of room to easily implement either the suggested advanced rules or ones of your own making.
It recreates the thrill of a WW1 dogfight both simply and effectively, with both sides trying to anticipate their opponents move.
On the down side the box and contents feel a little small for the price, with more money needing to be forked out if you want to replace the card depictions of the aircraft with actual models. While not being a nescesity, it does improve the look and feel of the game drastically.
If money is no object, it's an excellent game. If you have a tight budget however, it might be worth holding back, as the models and add ons available are undoubtedly what make the game shine.

I love this game. It took a friend and I 5 minutes to begin our first game straight out of the box, and we enjoyed it so much, we played two more games straight afterwards.
The rules are simple, and the mechanics work very well indeed and give some flavour of air war in WW1.
While simple in nature, the game continues to be fun to play and challenging too.
I can't wait to try out the miniatures to see how that changes things.

The deluxe set hasn't been released in the English-speaking world but that's not a problem - The rules are freely downloadable in English on the net and with this set you will at least be able to play all the aircraft so far released in miniature without having to buy a "Watch your back" set for the "B" damage deck.
If you plan on running larger games (4+) aircraft you will need the extra "A" damage deck too (the deluxe set comes with 2).
A good fun tabletop game though.
