Topgun in helicopters.
Thats it. That tells you all you need to know! The plot line is incredibly similar. Young talented pilot, starts out well, has to go through a period of trial and self doubt, emerges to go to war and be a hero in battle. Picks up girl along the way.
The one standout feature of this film is Tommy Lee Jones: He has some absolutely fantastic one-liners in this film. He gets 110% out of the script and turns in a fine performance. While everyone else in the film is bland, his role is actually quite developed, with some great comic moments, some drama, and an actually rather well portrayed personal-life of being a man moving into middle age.
The air to air sequences are fantastic. The whole thing is absolutely unashamedly patriotic. There is no deep moral analysis of the rights and wrongs of war. This is a gung-ho movie from start to finish.
Definitely worth a watch over a couple of beers with the lads, although it has sadly dated now.
