Staying late in the lab at the Feynman Institute's Time Search Project, Dr Jane Florian witnessed something she should never seen in the time machine created by resident boy genius David Wolfe. Having accidentally spied upon the future; specifically 5 years of upcoming significant events, a drunken David feels that Jane knows too much; the solution, send her back in time to the Middle Ages, living the cloistered life of a nun for 5 years before retrieving her.
Pushed into David's time machine, Jane does not find herself in a convent in France as planned, but in England. Saddled with luxurious clothes, exotic spices and gold (thoughtfully provided by David) Jane does the only thing she can; after spending years play acting in the Medievalist Society, she adopts her persona of Lady Jehane Fitzrose, a rich widow from the Holy Lands.
Accepting a job as Chatelaine (head housekeeper) in the small keep of Passfair, it soon dawns on Jane that she may well be stuck in the 12th Century, never to return home to coffee, chocolate and modern day conveniences. Desperately aware any small action may inadvertently change history, Jane attempts to keep a low profile, difficult considering her unusual height of 5 foot 7, her deep attraction to a warrior named Sir Daffyd ap Bleddyn and the fact she's caught the eye of notorious womaniser King John.
I really enjoyed this author's sci-fi erotic romance "Walking on the Moon", and was so impressed in fact that I purchased this book. Not a huge fan of historical romance, I cannot believe I am raving about one, but this is a wonderful story with a fabulous twist. Jane and Daffyd are both great characters; however it is Jane's attempts to fit into medieval life that really captures the reader. A strong modern woman, Jane finally understands that in the 12th century, as a single female she has no choice but to follow the dictates of her lord, the young Sir Stephen Duvrai, Lord of Passfair Castle, and a man with the power to marry her off should he choose. Despite her hardships, Jane manages well in her new life until she is nearly raped by an outlaw at a fair she organises. Rescued by Sir Daffyd, although Jane tries to deny her feelings for this man, she finds herself marrying him. This is wonderful stuff by Susan Sizemore and I will certainly be checking out her other romances, no matter which genre they may be.
