Michelle Yeoh (The Heroic Trio; Twin Warriors; Tomorrow Never Dies; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) & Donnie Yen (Shanghai Knights; Blade 2; Iron Monkey; Hero) star in this action comedy about the legendary Wing Chun (Yeoh), a young woman in a remote village who introduced to the world (and had it named after her), one of the most succesful forms of unarmed combat, Wing Chun, also known as Snake-Crane style which is a concept-based Chinese martial art and form of self-defense utilising both striking and grappling while specialising in close-range combat. Why? Apart from the fact that it stars Michelle Yeoh, it's an absolute delight from start to finish.

Wing Chun, played by Yeoh, is the somewhat androgynous protector of a village from a gang of thugs and bullies. She runs a tofu shop with her vivacious and avaricious aunt and befriends and protects a young widow whom its seems every male in the village lusts after uncontrollably. The aunt lusts after the rich, greedy local scholar. A visiting martial artist appears in search of his childhood sweetheart, mistaking Yeoh for a man and the widow for his sweetheart. At one point Yeoh's own interest in the widow appears somewhat ambiguous.

Cue a romantic comedy of errors plus lots of fighting. It's really a rather sweet film with Yeoh displaying a shy humour and an emotional vulnerability which contrasts with her bravura displays of fighting skills. (The rest of the cast are all fine too.) Despite the fact that at one point Yeoh deliberately roasts a bady guy's genitals, it isn't a violent film, although it doesn't stint on the action either -the methodical demolition of a chauvinist thug while maintaining the integrity of a large plate of tofu is a particular highlight.

Wing Chun (the movie) will leave you with a smile on your face, laughter in your throat, and, if you aren't already, a big fan of Michelle Yeoh.

You'll have to excuse me now, it's fourteen hours since I first watched this movie and I want to see it again.

Kung-fu Chick-flick... 4 April 2001
Format:VHS Tape
This film gave me a nice surprise to find it had an emphasis on the female side of kung-fu. The action was still as fast and furious as any other of Yuen Woo-Ping's films and if the choreography had been that much better (obvious speeding up in some parts, strings occasionally over-used), I would have rated this film 5 stars.

The plot is true to the story of how Wing Chun Kung Fu left South Shaolin Temple to be taught to the general public, which is interesting from a historical point of view. The storyline does become a bit tedious at times however, as the usual 'misinterpreted identity' plot device which appears in many Hong Kong movies becomes a bit over-used. Never-the-less I expected nothing more.

The overall quality of the film is increased by the skill and presence of other top-grade performers such as Donnie Yen, although Michelle Yeoh still gives as good as she gets with a show comparable to that in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. For people who are interested in Kung-fu films as a genre, or interested in the feminine side of martial arts, then this film is guaranteed to please. It is also unique in showing Wing Chun Kung Fu in use; a style not often included in such films because of the more popular North Shaolin style.

Fans of Michelle Yeoh, dubbed Asia's Action Queen, are in for a treat with this movie. Wing Chun is a formidable female character whose kung fu is feared and revered at the same time. To play a character whose fists are as fast as lightning requires a great deal of physical prowess, and Michelle Yeoh fits the bill to a T.

The action scenes are very visual, almost fantasy-like in some instances. The amount of effort put into the choreography of the fighting scenes is amazing. This is one of Yeoh's most demanding projects, and the Malaysian actress succeeded in delivering good fighting for her action fans.

However, the storyline is almost laughable (surprise, surprise!), the acting exaggerated and a bit slapstick, and the subtitles could be very misleading. But when you watch kung fu movies, those would be the least of your worries.
