Product Description

Review

"A master class in Burgundy, given by one of the world's foremost authorities. Coates, who clearly adores the region, knows Burgundy intimately. His evaluations of its wine producers are delightfully opinionated." --Jacqueline Friedrich, author of The Wines of France

Coates is an expert guide. A wine merchant for 20 years, he became a Master of Wine in 1971 and produced The Vine magazine from 1984 to 2005. Who better to describe the region best known for Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and Puligny-Montrachet? --Guy Collins, Bloomberg News

"What other writer gives you the confidence that he truly knows each property, its terroir, its proprietors and its produce, and can give you a fresh and honest assessment?" --Hugh Johnson

Product Description

Ten years after the publication of the highly acclaimed, award-winning "Cote D'Or: A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy", the "Bible of Burgundy," Clive Coates now offers this thoroughly revised and updated sequel. This long-awaited work details all the major vintages from 2006 back to 1959 and includes thousands of recent tasting notes of the top wines. All-new chapters on Chablis and Cote Chalonnaise replace the previous volume's domaine profiles. Coates, a Master of Wine who has spent much of the last thirty years in Burgundy, considers it to be the most exciting, complex, and intractable wine region in the world, and the one most likely to yield fine wines of elegance and finesse. This book is an indispensable guide for amateur and professional alike by one of the world's leading wine experts, writing with his habitual expertise, lucidity, and unequaled firsthand knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential tasting notes on Burgundy, 11 Jan 2009
By M. van Elburg (Dieren, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As we all know, high-end Burgundy is expensive. And since these bottles are rarely on the free market at all and we therefore have hardly any opportunity to taste the wine before buying, it is a good thing reliable connaisseurs make their independent notes public (and I'm glad for them they can make a living by that). Of course you have to assess by comparing your own impressions over a longer period of time who's palate you share. Is it Robert Parker's? Or Clive Coates'? At least for Burgundy I prefer Clive Coates (and I hardly ever agree with Robert Parker at all, because I do not like the overextracted wines he so admires), and consider this work therefore essential reading for the serious Burgundy-lover.

Coates' first volume (Côte d'Or) is of course still a must-read and not replaced by this one, because the evaluation of the domaines is much more expanded in that first work. But for tasting notes of Burgundy after 1995, this book is essential. Moreover Coates' writing style is excellent: to the point but with a poetic hint. So it's fun reading as well!

3.0 out of 5 stars Clive Coates-The wines of Burgundy, 5 May 2008
By Mr. A. N. Matthews (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book because Clive Coates perhaps more than any wine writer has an in depth knowledge of Burgundy. The 1997 volume was outstanding but this rewrite is not as good. It would have been perhaps more helpful to have the domaine profiles of the last volume expanded and updated rather than having copious tasting notes of old vintages many of which I am never going to experience.
The double columns on each page make for difficult reading.
The maps are outstanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview, 21 Nov 2008
By H. Kooreman "Huib" (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I believe this books provides an excellent overview of a very complex region. Few people have such an up to date insight into wine making in Burgundy. The first part of the book provides a detailed overview of wines and wine makers, the second part reviewes the vintages. Indeed, it is unlikely many people are going to taste wines older then a decade, but it still provides much insight into the best wines.
