Book Description

11 Oct 1993 Classic Wine Library
Having written on wine since the mid 1970s, Tom Stevenson was asked by the Sunday Telegraph to devise an annual wine publication for ordinary, everyday consumers, and in 1982 he conceived the Good Wine Guide, which he edited for a further 5 years. He divides his writing between consumer publications and more technical trade magazines and has been recognised for both having been voted "Wine Writer of the Year" in 1986 and "Wine Trade Writer of the Year" in 1990. In his own inimitable style, Tom Stevenson has not only profiled 300 producers and every style of Alsace wine, but has also analysed all 118 wine villages, 51 grands crus, 84 lieux-dits, 28 clos and 4 wine-producing chateaux. He sets the scene by succinctly summarising the region's rich and colourful history.

This is undoubtedly THE BOOK on Alsace wines. However, it is getting a bit old, so an update would be very useful. Please...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent allround wineguide. 27 Oct 1999
As a "teacher in wine and organizer of wineevaluations" I can recommend this book. If you need more information about Wines from Alsace, you will have to visit the winemakers themselves for the last details.

5.0 out of 5 stars the book is dated but very well written 21 Oct 2001
By Ray Barnes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For Alsace wine enthusiasts this is a wonderful read, and has just about all the pertinent facts about the region, among them all the famous and less well known varietals, all the major producers, the villages, the grand cru vinyards complete with maps, technical information about the Vendanges Tardive and Selection de Grains Noble and how they compare to the German QmP designations, extensive tasting notes, and a detailed vintage chart up to 1992. Needless to say a new edition with more recent vintages would be very welcome. There is over 570 pages of detailed information, including a linguistic analysis. The author wears his considerable scholarship lightly and his sense of humor is used judiciously. Recommended with enthusiasm.
