This is the most commercially sucessful of the late saxophonists many releases, due in no small part to the Bill Withers vocalised hit single "Just The Two Of Us". The five remaining instrumental tracks just ooze that "late night with someone close" feeling. Grover's saxophone is warm and inviting. Too often overlooked by jazz purists for being too commercial, Grover nevertheless did not become a household name . This is a tragedy which can only be partly resolved by purchasing this album regardless of your personal musical styles preference.

If you love the smooth sound of Grover Washington Jr, this is his best CD brought to life in this wounderful DVD-Audio Version. you can even sing along to Just The Two Of Us (the words are on screen).
The DVD-Audio is the best thing i have ever heard it is like your really at the concert (especially if you own a sourround sound system) it really brings the music to life you hear all the levels that are lost ona CD.
you really do have to try it to know what i am talking about! the quality and the whole listening experience is 100% better. the couple of extra £'s that is cost to get the DVD-Audio version is well worth the expense.
Happy Listening!

Commercial jazz has had its fair share of knocks since it became fashionable to dislike the (sometimes) bland and souless playing of the likes of Kenny G et al.However, amongst the largely mindless pop music of the eighties shone this fine album.

Commercial-yes, but the playing and production are of such high quality that if you cannot recognise the splendour of these summer jazz/samba beats then you do not understand music. The soulful bonus of the fantastic Bill Withers is just about the icing on the cake.

Relax, kick back on a summer's day with a glass of cool wine and let the vibe wash over you-that's a rare kind of musical peace that you need to experience.

I own about 50 DVD audio discs, and a very good Meridian surround sound system. The quality of the sound on this DVD is the best I have ever heard, any where, at any time, on any system. What a tester this is for your kit. It's the first thing I let people hear to show the pure quality of 5 channel DVD audio, and they all go away converted. If you have heard this, and you think you have heard anything of better quality {Technicaly} I would love to know what it is. Its just a pity there are not lots more DVD Audio titles out there.

I can vividly recall being in London on a warm spring Saturday morning in April 1981 (on Holiday from Dublin). Have graduated the year previous from Rock to Soul Music in a big way - I sauntered into the "Record Shack"- Funk Specialists located in the fruit and veg market area of Berwick Street in Soho. Up on the wall was 'Jazz Fusion' album of the month - "Winelight" by GROVER WASHINGTON, Jr.

I'd no idea at the time that it had been a Jazz sensation in the States for over 6 months - crossing over big time to the Pop realm - nominated for two Grammys (and winning). Then the guy behind the counter put the needle down for the umpteenth time that day. I only had to hear the first minutes of its title track and bought it immediately. And it's been on my turntable and on Jazz Radio Station playlists ever since. Here are the Wine And Sax details...

Released January 2001 - Warners Jazz/Elektra Masters 7559-62608-2 (Barcode 075596260824) CD breaks down as follows (39:14 minutes):

1. Winelight
2. Let It Flow (For "Dr. J")
3. In The Name Of Love
4. Take Me There [Side 2]
5. Just The Two Of Us [vocals Bill Withers]
6. Make Me A Memory (Sad Samba)

Tracks 1 to 6 are the album "Winelight" released November 1980 in the USA on Elektra Records 7E-305 and April 1981 in the UK on Elektra Records K 52262. It rose to Number 2 on the US Billboard R&B charts and Number 5 on Billboards Pop charts (UK Number 34 on the Pop charts in May 1981).

The gatefold digipak features the generic 'Warner Jazz' and 'Elektra Masters' logos on the front and rear - you get a very basic gatefold inlay with notes on the album by Chrissie Murray, then Editor of Jazzwise magazine.

There is a paradox in the career of the late Grover Washington. Although he was a tremendously successful saxophonist and made a number of very commercial albums,he wasn't properly recognised for the great jazz musician that he actually was. Although this 1980 album has been around for many years,it still sells well and is very popular with the jazz club set in many parts of the world. This is a great album for chilling out on a hot summers evening and the music has a very fresh summery sound which is very appealing even now 13 years into the new century of so called cool jazz.
The CD by Elektra Records is superb but if you can get your hands on the DVD AUDIO disc the sound is mind blowing. To obtain full benefit from DVD AUDIO you will need to have a suitable DVD AUDIO player which is capable of Advanced Resolution Multi Channel Surround Sound. There is also an advanced stereo channel mix on the disc also for use in DVD AUDIO players.
If however you have a good quality DVD video player with DTS 5.1 (Digital Theatre Sound)capability then you can still enjoy the great sound quality of the disc but somewhat less qulity than DVD AUDIO.

If your DVD Video player does not have DTS capability all is not lost as there is also a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix included. For those who are not familiar with surround sound the reference to 5.1 means that the disc will play through 2 front and 2 rear speakers and 1 centre speaker. That gives you the 5 and the reference to .1 refers to the bass subwoofer speaker hence the term 5.1 system. There are also 6.1 and 7.1 systems and all surround sound discs are compatible with 5.1, 6.1 and 7.
