The Dummies guides are generally a very simple way to get into a subject and this book is no exception.
However - it has an American slant and for those in the UK market this is a) frustrating and b) not always useful.
It is easy to read and for those with little or no knowledge of wine it is worth buying.
The physical (paper) quality of the book is quite poor, so there is little tangible pleasure in reading it... not my best wine book.
For those who understand a little bit more and really want to learn then the WSET course books are highly recommended...

I bought this for somebody who works in a fine dining restaurant and needs something to help him through understanding wine for a wide range of guest requests.

He thinks it's fabulous and takes it everywhere with him, says it's comprehensive, easy to pick up and read for 5 minutes or an hour, format is good for quick checks too.

I was surprised just how good `Wine for Dummies' actually was. It is completely engaging, jargon free, and eases you into all aspects of wine with minimal fuss. It covers a wide variety of topics including getting to know wine, tasting wine, how wine is made and bottled, reading labels, buying wine in a shop and restaurant, serving wine, chapters on Old World and New World wines in detail, collecting wine, marrying wine and food, vintage wine charts and more besides and it imparts a great deal of the wisdom and enthusiasm of the authors. You get the typical `Dummies' format with plenty of icons, cartoons and the obligatory part of tens, but this is better written than some other 'for dummies' books I've read and it was immensely enjoyable. I came away knowing a great deal more about wine and with increased confident to buy it in shops and order it in restaurants. Not to mention opening a bottle of Champagne without causing someone bodily harm! This is a great entry level book about wine and has plenty to offer those new to the topic or even those with some existing knowledge. Well worth a look.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Where do I begin? This book is actually really really good for those who enjoy wine but have very little knowledge on the subject. If you want to get more involved in your wine then this is the perfect starting point. The writing style is easy to read and flowing and it gives you a really good progressive knowledge on the must know regions and grape varieties. I learned an awful lot from this and it is a book you can easily return to for more insight. It's not a reference guide - you can read this page to page right to the end and you will enjoy it rather than feel it is a tedious intellectual endeavour. Recommended!

This was a present for my brother in-law who was just taking his first steps in the world of wine and he seemed to enjoy it. Easy to read and understand for beginners.
