Product Description

Having written The Association s Windy while living in David Crosby s basement, RUTHANN FRIEDMAN remained an intriguing and mysterious figure of 60s pop for decades. Until recently her released output consisted of a lone folk album issued in 1970. Unbelievably, many fascinating recordings she created with some of the most revered names in West Coast pop have remained locked away in the vaults... until NOW! Featuring productions by CURT BOETTCHER, TOMMY LiPUMA, and VAN DYKE PARKS, Windy: A Ruthann Friedman Songbook contains 18 tracks from 1966-1970, focusing on Ruthann s pop/rock efforts from this era. Musicians include RANDY NEWMAN, RON ELLIOTT of The Beau Brummels, and RUSS GIGUERE from The Association! One listen to this CD and you ll wonder why Ruthann didn t have more hits of the magnitude of Windy. Mastered by Alan Brownstein FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES! The full-colour booklet includes rare photos and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of Ruthann herself! Produced for reissue by Steve Stanley.

Now Sounds are currently probably the best record label in the Cherry Red conglomerate who have produced a consistent stream of excellent reissues, vault excavations and compilations over the past few years. Now Sounds remastering is always superb as are their liner notes (often with evocative photos) and the graphic design is from the top drawer. I am therefore pleased to report this latest CD continues this trend unearthing a 'lost' album from the obscure songstress responsible for the Sunshine Pop classic "Windy" taken to the top of the charts by The Association in '67. A demo of that track sung by the songwriter is here (recorded after the Association hit with it) together with a bunch of sessions, often with backing by members of the wrecking crew, for an aborted album for A&M as well as some earlier '66 sessions with the legendary Sunshine Pop producer Curt Boettcher. All this stuff is primo once you've gotten used to Ruthann's slightly unorthodox artless singing style - the songs range from Sunshine Pop to Folk Rock to Mild Psych and one track even has a hint of Garage Rock ('Burning House') to it. The playing is fantastic with some surprisingly famous names in there including Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks & Ron Elliot (of the cult San Fran mid-60's folk-rockers; The Beau Brummels).

Particular favourites include the baroque "Don't Say No" later covered by the L.A. Psycher's The Oracle, the sitar-laced "Raining Down On My House" and the folk-rocking "Halfway There". She also knocks out pretty effective covers of Van Dyke Parks' "High Coin" and Randy Newman's oft-covered "I Think It's Going To Rain Today".

Ruthan Friedman became well known as the friend of the Association rock group who wrote the song Windy, that became instant #1 Billboard at the time and one of the most airplayed songs in the radio. Now in 2013 they release a compilation of her songbook (there is a second CD after this album in the Market now). Of course she sangs Windy and other songs, most of them written herself and played by a first grade line up of side musicians. She as a singer started to sing in a high key showing limited voice habilities, but later the producer corrected this making her singing in a lower key getting a better result. The booklet that comes with the CD tells very interesting stories with Stephen Stills, Jefferson Airplane and others. She was considered to be the singer for the Jefferson Airplane in the place of Signe Tolne Anderson, but the history told us that Grace Slick got the lead. I though that she could tried harder for the position and the story could be very different for her. She lacked of self confidence in her career at that time.
Well this is a CD for Association's fans and those who like some rock history.

From the 60s… Some wonderful surprises! 26 Nov. 2013
By ruthann friedman carlisle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Songwriter Ruthann Friedman rambled through the mid-'60s and early '70s, rubbing elbows with San Francisco's psychedelic royalty and eventually lending her song "Windy" to AM pop group the Association. "Windy" would become one of the Association's biggest hits, but while the royalty checks for that singsongy piece of fluffy pop poured in, Friedman was constantly working on songs by turns more gritty and leaning toward the psychedelic side of folk. Windy: A Ruthann Friedman Songbook follows 2006's collection of unreleased material A Hurried Life, as well as reissues of Friedman's sole solo album Constant Companion. The collection's 18 tracks include demo recordings from early stages of the ubiquitous "Windy," gentle folk pop rambles like "When You're Near" and later period songs that draw on the Haight/Ashbury rock vibes of the Summer of Love to a serviceable degree. With a smoky voice not unlike similarly mystical folkstresses Kathy Smith, Linda Perhacs, and later Laura Nyro, Friedman's songs are generally more stormy than poppy, and guest appearances by Randy Newman and Van Dyke Parks add some color to this scattered but thoroughly enjoyable scrapbook of Friedman's various unheard phases.
