Book Description

This compact and comprehensive book systematically unveils what resolute users of the new Windows XP operating system will find interesting and useful, with little-known details, utility programs, and configuration settings all captured in a consistent reference format.

A hands-on guide, Windows XP in a Nutshell cuts through the hype and gives practical details you can use every day. It's written by David A. Karp, the best-selling author whose no-nonsense "Annoyances" books and web site (Annoyances.org) have helped thousands of users solve problems and improve their experience with Windows®. The co-author is none other than Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly & Associates, whose books have revolutionized computer book publishing with their commonsense approach and depth of detail.

At the heart of the book is a 200-plus-page reference section titled "Windows XP Applications and Tools," containing:

  • Detailed information on most of the commands and utilities available with Windows XP, including Start Menu accessories, command prompt tools, hidden system administration utilities such as the Registry Editor, Microsoft Management Console, and TweakUI.
  • A comprehensive "Where to Find It?" section designed to give Windows 9x/Me and Windows NT/2000 users a guide to the XP counterparts to previously familiar features, plus information on installing and upgrading.
  • The Task and Setting Index, which provides users with quick access to locations of the hundreds of settings in Windows XP, organized alphabetically.
  • A complete reference to the command prompt-- not only covering the basics of the command line and the different ways to use it, but also the advanced commands and scripting features at Windows XP's disposal.

Packed with numerous tips and tricks, while warning of potential pitfalls, Windows XP in a Nutshell enables anyone to get the most out of all the resources available in XP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, accessible and information-rich 14 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
O'Reilly Nutshell books are great for giving you the information you need, quickly and easily and with no excess verbiage. This is still a thick book - over 600 pages - but it's almost all signal and virtually no noise. Following a brief overview of the OS, there's a large alphabetical command reference, and superb coverage of networking, the command prompt and scripting. If you decide to get this book, you certainly won't need the 'Missing Manual' but 'Windows XP Annoyances' makes a pretty good partner. In summary, this is a must-buy. It contains twice as much information as books with twice its bulk. (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Windows XP 30 Jun 2002
Format:Paperback
This book lives up to its title and does indeed provide all the information you require aboiut Windows XP 'In a Nutshell'.

It gives a comprehensive coverage of Windows XP and all of its features, without getting bogged down with long winded tutorials and explanations. It is an ideal book for both IT professionals and home users who want to familiarise themselves with many of Windows XPs new features. I particularly liked the 'Applications and Tools' chapter that gives a complete alphabetical listing of all the components that make up Windows XP.

Overall the book is well laid out, very informative and easy to read. It makes and ideal reference book and, compared to other books on the market, it seems to offer more information whilst being more concise. I think it is excellent value for money and i will certainly look at other books in their range.

Highly recommended!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book 26 Sep 2003
By PW
Format:Paperback
Having not read widely on the subject I can't say this is the best but another book would have to go some way to beat it.

Good points - very accessible (alphabetical listing of tasks, setting, applications and tools), concise, comprehensive and well laid out. I was new to XP before reading the book and I found it very easy to understand.

Things that are OK but could be improved - the chapter on 'The Command Prompt' is very useful but doesn't quite live up to the 'complete documentation' claim made on the first page. As a scripting novice some more information on syntax would have been useful.

Bad points - littered with mistakes (particularly 'Figures' that don't show what the text says they should). This is annoying and downgraded my rating from 5 to 4 stars.

The book is great value and I got a great deal of stuff from it that I could go and apply. I would certainly recommend it but would suggest a 'corrected' edition if one exists.
