2.0 out of 5 stars Not a worthwhile upgrade 12 Nov 2008
A few months ago I bought a new laptop which came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I've now had the opportunity to compare Vista to my desktop PC's XP installation. In summary Vista doesn't make a compelling upgrade. Memory usage is considerably higher, the default User Account Control setup is so overbearing that I disabled it completely and from the perspective of the end user the new features seem to be mostly related to visual tarting up and transparency effects. These new features add nothing much to productivity. The frequency and volume of critical security patches to apply seems to continue as with XP. There are some useful features but most of these can be added to XP by using existing free applications. Not a worthwhile upgrade.

3.0 out of 5 stars Product OK. Service chaotic 2 Dec 2009
The product is OK. However it came with the offer of a free upgrade to Windows 7 which so far hasn't worked - all sorts of hassle with the promotional codes. I wish I had had the time to go to PCworld to get the same offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal if you need windows on your Mac. 23 May 2008
Got Vista as I need to use Microsoft Access on my Macbook. Installed it via bootcamp no problems, I was amazed how quick it was to install. Vista is fine I've had no problems, I use OS X most of the time but it's good to have windows for the few things I need it for, the best of both worlds. If you're looking for windows for you mac, go for this. Good value at £80 when on offer, it's now gone back up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse 27 Nov 2009
I liked Windows XP and when I installed Vista I was very disappointed. I was hoping that Windows 7 would be an improvement, but its not. It has a lot of features that look good initially but serve no real purpose in day to day use. My laptop seemed slower than usual, and froze up 3 times in one day (something its never done before). I have finally had enough of Windows and have bought a Macbook. I've not had the Mac very long but already I can see why Mac owners are so smug. Why did I waste all those years with Windows?

1.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had never heard of Vista 25 Jun 2010
By Choosy
I have found Vista simply "not fit for purpose".

MY biggest mistake was to give up XP.

I purchased a new computer with Vista just over a year ago. During the whole time Vista has been a real pain in the backside. It was incompatible with most of my equipment and software which has resulted is having to upgrade everything at BIG additional costs. Problems solved - not at all....

My Vista system crashes regularly on almost a weekly basis without any cause or warning. I have used computers right from from the days of Sinclair, Commodore Pet 64 right through to the present day high flying machines and up until Vista I have usually been able to sort most issues. Even if I resort to paying for "professional" help after numberous wasted hours they still are unable to resolve the issues any quicker or better than I, if at all. I associate with many professional IT people and I have yet to find one who has anything positive to say about Vista.

I often have to revert back to using an eight year old laptop with XP installed just to get my work done on time. This simply shouldn't be !

Normally, when one buys a new piece of equipment or service which is "not fit for purpose" it would be expected for the responsible company to provide the solution free of charge. Microsoft has introduced an operating system thats so unstable that I'm dammed if I'm going to fork out any more money to rectify what most people agree is a flawed operating system.

It's a cheek and a disgrace that Microsoft expect the users to purchase the additional and extremely high price charged for Windows 7 to rectifly the faulty Vista software. Microsoft should be accountable and concede that they have not been fair to it's previously loyal customers.

My future purchases will definitely not have any more Microsoft products.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dire 28 Aug 2009
What can I say? How have microsoft got the nerve to release a worse version of XP and call it better?

Other issues that spring to mind:
1) despite it's massive bloated size it still can't protect itself from viruses, so the first thing you are advised to do is buy additional anti-virus software. Couldn't they have built virus protection in?

2) They have changed some of the standard parts of the windows inetrface so that they neither look the same, work the same, or have been given different names. (for example, the old 'Add/Remove Programmes' has been renamed and tucked away somewhere else - why?) Some of the explorer windows are different and more limited.

3) Vista has some minor improvements (when it breaks it fixes itself, but think about it, is that really an improvement?) but basically it was just a big money grabbing exercise. Why else would they release it when Windows 7 was already well in the pipeline?

4) Slow, unless you buy a very powerful (expensive) computer. Is that progress?!

I got Vista Home Premium preinstalled on my new computer and I personally think it is the best version of Windows yet, it looks fantastic and works really well too. There are some great security features and everything is so easy to do. I would never go back to an older version of Windows now.

But my Vista was preinstalled on a new computer which is fully designed for Vista in the first place. If you have a really powerful computer (one of the last ones to include XP) then you should be okay installing Vista, however if you have any less than 1 GB of RAM, don't bother. Vista is a fantastic operating system but it needs a Ferrari of a computer to run it.
