I find that a lot (not everyone but most) of people who don't like vista barely used it then jumped on the anti-vista bandwagon. I to begin with found Vista a struggle compared with XP however after a few weeks it did everything I wanted it to do whilst be very reliable. I'm an Engineering student so use it a lot for Eclipse, Visual studio, CAD, xilinx, Expression web, office: excel and word, windows movie maker and entertainment like DVD's and some gaming.

Problems: To be honest after getting my head around it the only real problems were with some older games not working (not a big deal) and with networking. Now the networking is in some respects better than XP but in others more tricky. A few times I've had to call tech support when connecting stuff up though it's usually a short call.

Also there's no reason to not leave IE8 there, you don't have to use it, I have it installed but never use it, I use Opera as my default browser and have Firefox for some of the few websites that don't work in Opera.

Summary: It's not as bad as everyone says it is, It works well when updated and you get your head round it. However one would be wise to just get windows 7

In addition to the horror stories I've heard and read about Vista, I'd also read that the Home Basic edition is basically like XP and therefore not worth getting. Though Vista may have been dis-functional in 2007, the 2008 edition of Home Basic with Service Pack 1 is anything but XP! Installation was painless and despite my motherboard manufacturer not offering Vista compatible drivers, Windows Update made easy work of finding current VGA, Network & Audio drivers to run my Motherboard under XP. I've had one program that will not function correctly but it's a specialist piece of Broadcast Software for which a Vista version is available so all in all, no major problems, catastrophe's etc etc. I think the Vista horror stories mainly relate to early releases and general compatibility for programs doesn't appear to be an issue. Ultimately I ask myself if I would go back to XP? The answer: no way, this is the way forward!

I would rather eat a woodlouse sandwich than use Vista anymore. Recently bought a cheap machine to replace a broken laptop which came with Home Basic pre-installed. My comments as follows:

* Even with 3GB of RAM and a decent dual core processor it's sloooooow
* User account control - mummy is watching and doesn't think you want to do that - are you sure - are you really, really sure....
* And if you turn it off it keeps throwing up security alerts every time you switch the machine on
it doesn't like the fact that I don't want Internet Explorer 8 (I use Firefox) and keeps on getting stroppy and giving me more security alerts - evidently I have to install a special 3rd party tool to stop it doing this!!!!
* Doesn't work properly with some older software (actually, not that old)
* New version of windows explorer is worse to use than the XP version - fixed field widths GRRRR! How stupid is that?
* No picture viewer like XP. WHY NOT? Instead you have to run the "slide show function"

Sum-up:
It's pants and only for people who don't know any better.
It's not as good as XP but that's why Windows 7 will be along soon
