5.0 out of 5 stars A peak under the hood of the Windows OS 16 Sep 2011
By EJ fan
The Sysinternals Suite is a collection of more than 70 diagnostic and troubleshooting utilities which are free to download from Microsoft Technet. Although it started out as a separate company (as Winternals Software) by Bryce Cogswell and Mark Russinovich, it was bought by Microsoft in 2006. This book is a guide on how to use these tools to keep your system running smoothly.
The book starts with a quick chapter on the background behind the utilities which explains how they can be obtained and where to find related material on the Sysinternals website. Next the book devotes a chapter on the some of the core concepts of Windows. Although well explained, this is a short overview and I imagine it will puzzle someone that isn't acquainted with basic programming/Windows concepts. But, to be fair, this isn't a book for beginners.
Part II of the book is the usage guide to the tools themselves. A chapter is devoted to either a single major utility (in the case of process explorer, for example), or a group of tools which are related by subject (e.g. security utilities). While you can get a lot of the core information on their website, the book allows the authors to go into more detail and include background along with other hints and tips.
If you haven't used the utilities before then part III will probably be the most helpful. In it, the Mark goes through how they can be used to solve real life problems. The idea here is really to give you some thoughts on how you might tackle your own problems, as it would be impossible to provide a step-by-step approach to fault finding of this complexity.

5.0 out of 5 stars PC problems resolved 5 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Mark Russionovich has created tools to resolve many computer problems; of which he describes in this book. I must admit, after reading Windows Sysinternals Administrators' Reference, I have implemented them on my system. And they do work. Informative, easy to understand, and written with non-technical people in mind, I recommend this book. It would suit system builders alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money 18 Dec 2011
Even though most of the utilities are self explanatory this book filled in the gaps admirably and covered the advanced options exceptionally well
