The book claims to be a "complete study guide", could not disagree more!
I have used this book for 410,411,412 training and it does not cover the exams.
A few examples:
Applocker is "covered" in about 20 lines, that won't do at the exam.
Likewise are the new Hyper-V features like SR-IOV and new ways to monitor performance in Hyper-V not even mentioned.

Throughout the book, the importance of powershell is mentioned, but when it comes the exercises and examples, the GUI is used most of the time.
There are several pages with exersices on creating OU's, Groups and users, all done with the GUI tools.
This has not really changed since Windows 2003, using powershell or the other tools you have to know to pass the exams would be benificial for the reader.

Chapters covers more than one exam, this makes it quite difficult to optimize your study time when preparing for a specific exam.

To sum up: The book will give you an idea about what you have to know, but you cannot pass the exams without reading additional articles and it can be quite difficult to figure out what to read when preparing for a specific exam.

I'm half way through this book - it's alright for the most part. I wouldn't recommend it for the complete novice as it is a difficult enough of a read without trying to get your head around the concepts!

The book merges the three exams concepts into one book; if you're looking to do the 70-417 exam, that's fine, but it is a pain for anyone doing all 3 exams!

I'd say wait for the mastering windows 2012 book to come out, they are usually much more useful!

i am about 150 pages into the 900 pages of the book and so far it has been good. the book tries to cover everthing in depth and explains concepts and technologies in good detail.

the only thing i would say is you would need to have minimum 3 years experience working around these technologies to understand some of this book because it does assume you aldready know some concepts such as why we need a windows server and why we want to network it all together etc.

also importantly, this book seems to not only concentrate on the exam topics but also tries to teach you from start to finish about Microsoft servers and concepts so that you are not only studying to pass exams but you actually understand how it all works so it is good for me because i am the type of person who likes to not just learn how to pass the exam but understand sincerely how it all works and so i can be a confident worker and not pretend my whole life.

Have just finished reading this book and found it easy enough to work through as a whole perhaps if you are doing 70-417 the book may work for you. I have tried to use this to revise/study for 70-410 and have given up. It's just too hard to pick through the chapters and find what you need for each individual exam. Although the learning objectives are listed at the beginning of the chapter, I have found that these are not directly referred to or are missing completely from the chapter. Take Ch 3 for example, very little of what is promised in the LOs is in there! This is where I gave up and bought the MS Exam Ref 70-410. Probably won't use Sybex again.

Daunting at first but worth persevering with!

This is not a book you will finish in a week but if you want to go a long way to Windows Server mastery, this is an excellent guide.
