Not the best... 14 Nov 2009
By PD
Format:Paperback
I bought this book in preparation for trying to set up a server for a small company. I vaguely remembered the "for dummies" series being approachable so that was what I bought.

The book is packed with jargon, admittedly it explains what it means, but that doesn't really help you understand what it actually does on a practical level! The book contains the really easy stuff like, "When you install make sure you have your windows server 2008 DVD at hand.." but neglects to mention the mind boggling multitude of versions of windows server, if there is a 32 bit version, or even what a CAL is! The index is similarly rather limited.

Perhaps this book might come in useful when the system is up and running, but then it will be no easy job cutting through all the jargon to figure out what its actually trying to tell me! So I'm on the look out for another book on this matter!

I am an IT Professional and I work at a Help Desk supporting all Windows Products and a multitude of others.
I bought this book, knowing that the ".....FOR DUMMIES" series is well respected.
The book, however, is simply NOT for dummies at all!
It is couched, in parts, in appropriate language for dummies but - for the most part - makes lots of presumptions of knowledge and familiarity that simply should not be made for a book with this title!
I have managed to install Windows Server 2008 and created a Domain, but cannot get the Domain to connect to the external Internet - shouldn't be a problem with a book titled FOR DUMMIES but cannot find anything to guide me step by step to do this!
If you buy this book hoping for the subject of WINDOWS SERVER 2008 to be explained in easy to follow terms then you have made the wrong purchase!
I am now having to buy another book to assist me!
I work in IT, I design and host my own websites and I have a full and indepth familiarity with a whole blizzard of technology - but I simply cannot make headway with the subject of this book by using the book!
This book is an utter failure at addressing its intended audience and their requirements. Its a complete waste of shelf space!
