Product Description

Product Description
Shop windows bring glamour, fun, theatre and arts to the streets, a visible 24-hour expression of the store's image, brand and inspiration. Mary Portas brings her personal experience and insight to this selection of window displays. From New York to Paris, from San Francisco to Tokyo, her examples range from world-famous stores to tiny, little-known shops. A guide to the subject, this book examines the best use of space and props; the effect of lighting; the essence of styling; the potential of colour; the key role of mannequins; special characteristics of seasonal windows, and of tactical windows for the promotion of specific products; and how to achieve miracles on tight budgets. The book, illustrated with colour photographs, should be useful for anyone concerned professionally with retailing, design and visual communication.

4.0 out of 5 stars inspiring but how about non-fashion & non high street stores, 25 Aug 2003
By Gino Van Ossel (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
By means of over 250 colour illustrations the reader (or should I say 'viewer') gets an enormously inspiring look into the world's most excellent store windows.
The limitations and downsides are threefold. First, the book would have benefited from including 'bad' examples to contrast with the presented world class store windows. Secondly, the focus is almost entirely on high end high street stores (like department stores, Tiffany's, etc.). Unfortunately, other retail businesses have not been included. Thirdly and finally, the actual text in the book is too concise and too much written in an essay style, to offer concrete guidelines for building your own store windows.
But nevertheless and overall, it is highly recommended to anyone professionally involved in retail marketing in general and in visual merchandising in particular.
