Even though it's not designed as a test-prep assistant, the book provides a grounding in the TCP/IP protocols that's strong enough to help you pass the TCP/IP exam (70-059) en route to a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) certification.
The authors use the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model as their organisational guide. With each protocol in the TCP/IP stack, they document the relevant open standards with packet diagrams and clear explanatory prose. Lots of Network Monitor traces appear (with comments), too. Then, they tie the open standards to Microsoft-specific phenomena, including the company's implementation of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name Service (DNS), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS 5). Throughout, the authors place emphasis on what is communicated over the network in various situations, rather than on configuring Windows 2000 itself. The companion CD-ROM is underused, but it does contain some worthwhile network data captures that illustrate key transactions.
