Amazon.co.uk Review

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional has a lot of things going for it, but useful online documentation--particularly if you are not totally clueless about what you want to do and how to do it--is not one of them. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Expert Companion does a good job of explaining how to use the operating system in terms that, while often too basic for the "Expert" mentioned in the title, won't insult the intelligence of a generally capable Windows 2000 user. If you are an administrator of a Windows 2000 network, you would be wise to keep this book on hand as a resource for users who come to you with questions about how to make adjustments to their workstations. It will come in handy when you have to tweak user machines yourself as well.

Authors Craig Stinson and Carl Siechert provide lots of background information on numerous topics and frequently insert useful blurbs on potential pitfalls. (They cover easily neglected stuff, like forgetting to open a port in your firewall for time-synchronisation services.) Where appropriate, Stinson and Seichert give you step-by-step instructions for accomplishing tasks, reinforced by tables that enumerate options and alternatives. Overall, this is a highly effective (if unexciting) book about configuring Windows 2000 Professional. --David Wall

I think this is an excellent book!
It is definitely worth buying! It covers everything you need to know about Windows 2000 Professional. Tips tricks and workarounds are presented in a clear manner. The topics that are covered range from Setup, Networking, User management, Security issues, scripts, print & web servers and much more which might be useful to you if you are running win2k! Every topic that is covered is well illustrated with examples so that one can be sure to use & adjust the O/S the way you want it. An introduction to each section gives you a good idea, what will be covered. Screenshots illustrate the descriptive explanation and help you where necessary.
In case you are an expert or maybe just want to read up on something main sections are broken apart into single useful steps.
This book shows you how to make more out of your Windows! Honestly, there is not one bad thing about this book so far!
The contents of the CD include a NetMeeting Ressource Kit, IE Admin Kit and other useful shareware software that helps you maintain and speed up your PC.
The price for nearly 800 pages of advice is nothing, compared to what you get out of this companion.

Windows 2000 Professional hit the market and bang everyone was talking about how Microsoft has given us another operating system without any support. Well Microsoft Press has put together a book that makes supporting the newest Operating System a whole lot easier.

In Part 1 of the book and cd-rom combination you have Starting and Setting up of the operating system, The book details what to do, what to look for and how to make the installation easier. Part 2 covers the Management tools, Part 3 is managing Program, Part 4 Managing Hardware. Part 5 is for System administration.

In part 6 you have the topic of Network Management and Part 7 shows you how to use the internet. Part 8 shows techniques to security management with Part 9 dealing with the Automation of tasks, Finally there is Part 10 Maintaining and optimizing the operating system.

The book includes exercise for you to practice and includes pictures and screen shots along with diagrams, figures and tables. The Cd-rom that comes with the book includes the Internet Explorer Administration kit, several power tools and knowledge base articles for troubleshooting.

Microsoft Press has taken a great deal of time and effort to put together a very extensive book that will help out every user from beginner to expert. Checkout Microsoft Press's website for dozens of other title in the computer and certification areas.

This book is a must-have! 19 Oct 2000
By PSZ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have been using and managing computers for over 30 years. I think of myself as an expert user. And yet, after only ten minutes browsing this book, I found answers to questions that have been left unanswered by Microsoft, and by many other books; answers I have been looking for for several months, and some I had been searching for since my NT days. In addition, all explanations given are clear, concise and complete, which proves a level of expertise I can only bow to.

I have not yet read the book cover-to-cover, but I can already say, it's a must-have for every Windows 2000 Pro user who cares about how his (her) system works, and wants to make it work even better.

We can only wonder why Microsoft does not use the same writing style for its Resource kits...

800 Pages of Useful, Hard-to-Find Information 24 Oct 2001
By Dennis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Finally, a book for users like me! I am an experienced computer user with a deep background in many operating systems including Unix. I want consise information to help me really understand Windows 2000 as an expert user. It is not hard to find such books for Unix, probably because you pretty much have to be an expert to use Unix. Most Windows books, on the other hand, seem to be addressed to non-computer people.

I use this book regularly to look things up, but I've also enjoyed just browsing around discovering interesting things about Windows 2000. Actually, the book has given me a whole new appreciation of the operating system.
