Product Description

Roy Johnson, mantex.co.uk
Guide for those who have bought a new PC, and users wanting to explore detailed features of an operating system which is the best version of Windows to date. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
"...it's packed with useful information, tips, tricks and screenshots, all clearly explained. ... An excellent resource." Windows XP, August 2002 "This book is an essential addition to any XP enthusiast's library. Its aim is simple: to chronicle as many undocumented features as possible. It won't tell you much about things that you already know or can find out easily, but it will reveal just how deep XP goes... If you're after an introduction to XP, look elsewhere. If you want a companion to Windows XP Inside Out, or something that will appeal to someone with at least six months' XP experience, then you've struck gold." "If you want to delve deep into Windows XP, take this book with you..." - Nick Peers, PC Answers, September (Platinum Award) "O'Reilly have long had a reputation as the professional's choice when it comes to computer books, and volumes in their 'in a nutshell' series are the next best thing to an original supplier's manual. They contain at least as much information and usually in a more accessible format. And this book is no exception to the rule. At over GBP20 this book isn't cheap, but is is a comprehensive and easy-to-use guide to XP. If you only ever buy one Windows XP Book, you could do a lot worse than this one." - Ian Barker, PC-How To Windows XP, Issue 26 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, accessible and information-rich, 14 Jun 2003
By C. C. Williams - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
O'Reilly Nutshell books are great for giving you the information you need, quickly and easily and with no excess verbiage. This is still a thick book - over 600 pages - but it's almost all signal and virtually no noise. Following a brief overview of the OS, there's a large alphabetical command reference, and superb coverage of networking, the command prompt and scripting. If you decide to get this book, you certainly won't need the 'Missing Manual' but 'Windows XP Annoyances' makes a pretty good partner. In summary, this is a must-buy. It contains twice as much information as books with twice its bulk. (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Windows XP, 30 Jun 2002
This book lives up to its title and does indeed provide all the information you require aboiut Windows XP 'In a Nutshell'.

It gives a comprehensive coverage of Windows XP and all of its features, without getting bogged down with long winded tutorials and explanations. It is an ideal book for both IT professionals and home users who want to familiarise themselves with many of Windows XPs new features. I particularly liked the 'Applications and Tools' chapter that gives a complete alphabetical listing of all the components that make up Windows XP.

Overall the book is well laid out, very informative and easy to read. It makes and ideal reference book and, compared to other books on the market, it seems to offer more information whilst being more concise. I think it is excellent value for money and i will certainly look at other books in their range.

Highly recommended!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book, 26 Sep 2003
By Peter Whitehouse (Altrincham, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Having not read widely on the subject I can't say this is the best but another book would have to go some way to beat it.

Good points - very accessible (alphabetical listing of tasks, setting, applications and tools), concise, comprehensive and well laid out. I was new to XP before reading the book and I found it very easy to understand.

Things that are OK but could be improved - the chapter on 'The Command Prompt' is very useful but doesn't quite live up to the 'complete documentation' claim made on the first page. As a scripting novice some more information on syntax would have been useful.

Bad points - littered with mistakes (particularly 'Figures' that don't show what the text says they should). This is annoying and downgraded my rating from 5 to 4 stars.

The book is great value and I got a great deal of stuff from it that I could go and apply. I would certainly recommend it but would suggest a 'corrected' edition if one exists.
