Amazon.co.uk Review

Active Directories are one of the key components of Windows 2000 Server. By organising a directory hierarchically, Active Directories allow server structures to replicate or model the way individual organisations operate. In theory these should make life easier for both administrators and client users. But to successfully deploy Microsoft's new OS in a large organisation, network managers and developers have an urgent need to understand use and configuration.

MCSE Training Kit: Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory Services is the latest in the MCSE training kit series and is designed to get IT professionals skilled in using and understanding the new structures. Like its predecessors, it helps users pass the relevant MCSE exam at the end. The book assumes no prior knowledge of Active Directory--which at its publication is most people involved in networking. Readers are taken through the basics of planning and configuring an Active Directory infrastructure right up to the daily maintenance of a server running Active Directories.

This is a fully comprehensive guide to Active Directory from the people who designed it, but it might help to use it in conjunction with a lighter manual from an independent source, like Active Directory for Dummies. You will also need free access to a LAN and server to get some hands-on experience for some of the exercises. And even if you don^"t wish to take the exam, this book will prove an invaluable reference for those charged with implementing the new structures within the workplace.--Paul Fisher

The book is good for high level overview but you should not only read this book, if you want to pass the exam.

Good training guide 24 Feb 2000
By Bill Pearch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If you can't attend a training session at a CTEC this book is a good investment. I am using it in combination with the MOC from course #1560 - where the MOC is unclear, the book fills in and where the book is light on graphical aids the MOC's Power Point slides and videos help out greatly. There are times and places where the book leaves things a mystery (like WHY you need a global catalog server for logon) and you will need a second resource, possibly a third. Also, plan on having a couple of computers on a LAN all to yourself for a couple of days - much of the learning is best accomplished by actually trying the exercises.

It is a book... it does talk about Active Directory 3 Oct 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a luke warm approach to Active Directory. I read a lot of great information on Microsoft's TechNet site that did a much better job of addressing AD. This book, however, has a lot of scope, but not much depth.
You may want to keep shopping before buying this one.

OKish training book but need more for the MCP exam 13 Dec 2000
By Neil McCleane - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I used this book as a primary study source for the Active Directory Exam and found it to be limited in many respects. While it does cover most of the required topics, it can be very light on substance in parts, and leave you bored to tears in other sections. Obviously it was written by a collection of authors and hence there is no real coherence to the book. However that said it is from Microsoft, hence authoritative, and does at least touch on the relevant areas. I would suggest using the resource kit to fill in the gaps, or Alistair G. Lowe-Norris book for better presentation or the subject.
