Product Description

Product Description

Windows 8 is the most revolutionary version yet of the popular operating system from Microsoft. With a brand new interface, new ways of getting around and accessing items and new possibilities for mobile devices, Windows 8 really does take the computing experience to the next level. But with Windows 8 In Easy Steps you need not worry about being left behind and this book shows you everything you need to know to get up to speed with Windows 8.

The book begins by showing how to get started with Windows 8 and get to grips with the new Windows 8 interface. It deals with the basics (everything you could do from the Start screen in previous versions), accessing items, arranging your screen and using additional controls that are available from the sides of the screen.

A lot of the functionality of Windows 8 is aimed at touch screen devices, whether they are desktop computers, laptops or tablets. This is dealt with in depth, as well as showing how everything can still be done with a traditional mouse and keyboard.

Apps are at the heart of Windows 8 and the new Windows Store has an app for almost everything you could want to do. The book shows how to access and download apps and then how to work with them, and organize them, when you have them.

As well as the new features that are covered, all of the old favorites are looked at in detail, such as working with folders and files, accessing the Internet, using email and messaging, working with photos and video, networking with Windows and system security.

Windows 8 will open your eyes to a new way of computing and Windows 8 In Easy Steps will help you see clearly so that you can quickly feel comfortable and confident with this exciting new operating system.

More About the Author

I am a full-time writer who writes on a range of technology and digital skills subjects. Most of my books are in the In Easy Steps range and are aimed at the everyday user of computers, who want to get up and running quickly with new technology.

I write about different operating systems, such as Windows and Mac OS X, digital photography and the current growth area in computing: tablet computers. This includes the iPad, the Kindle Fire and Android tablets such as the Google Nexus and the Samsung Tab 2/3.

My latest book is iPad for Seniors in Easy Steps, which was published in October 2013.

My forthcoming books include updated titles covering OS X Mavericks, A Parent's Guide to the iPad and Photoshop Elements 12.

I also have 20 years of experience of working in corporate communications, which gave rise to one of my books, Effective Communications In Easy Steps.

I have also written about taking a gap year and working abroad and travelling remains one of my passions, when I am not writing new books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great help. 14 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It was well worth buying this product, before I upgraded to Windows 8. It is well laid out and easy to read and follow. Illustrations are very helpful. There were a couple of points that were slightly inaccurate, presumably because things in the program had been changed, since the book was written. Would still strongly recommend on what I have read so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Windows in easy steps 7 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book for an elderly neighbour who had been out and replaced his failing laptop with a new one. Of course the local PC store had not bothered to enquire about his platform etc, so he was stuck when he got home as he had never used Windows 8. Anyway got feedback from him on the book and he says it has served him well. It is easy to follow, does not make him feel like an idiot, it has clear concise instructions on how to proceed and progress, Delivery was fast and efficient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps make sense of Windows 8 19 Aug 2013
By Paul Madge #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book to help me get familiar with Windows 8 on my new laptop. Nick Vandome has produced an excellent book which is nicely laid out and illustrated and therefore easy to understand. I tend to use this as reference book for refining my technique or if I get into a jam, but for someone totally new to a Windows 8 PC then it is equally logical to work through each section and build their skills systematically.

I really like this book because of its clear layout, logical organisation and step by step approach. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Help 24 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I chose this book after reading some good reviews. It's very easy to follow and simple to understand. I upgraded to windows 8 in January so wanted this book as a back up and it has come in very useful. I've had some really good tips. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is not into technology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good For basics 29 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Really is good to get a basic grasp of Windows 8, for the new interface and the genral layout. Not for a more in depth use or troubleshooting. For the more comprehensive information go for the MS or Sybex type books.
