About the Author

Hugh Cornwell was the lead singer / guitarist and main songwriter in The Stranglers, one of the UK's best selling rock groups of the late 70s and 80s. Having left the band in 1990 he is now a successful solo artist in his own right, having released several albums. He has also published three acclaimed non-fiction books, the last of which was his autobiography, A Multitude of Sins.

Impressive Debut 25 Oct 2011
By T. Hurt
Format:Paperback
Ok, first off I'll admit I'm a Stranglers fan and I'd have bought this book even if all the other reviewers had panned it. However, I found it totally entralling all the way through. It's the sort of book you want to read in great chunks and at the same time don't want to come to an end.

All the characters are extremely well drawn and believable; they feel like people who really exist. I was also impressed with how Mr Cornwell handles the central character's slow mental unravelling, done with great subtlety. His writing style certainly has a lot of class.

So it doesn't matter if you know Hugh Cornwell from his music or have never even heard of him. This is a very unusual, extremely well-told story that stands up on its own merits.

About the best book I've read all year.

Damn Good 11 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a damn good read. Punchy, well-plotted, and with a sinister edge. The story concerns a male writer's growing paranoia and obsessive behaviour after he falls in love with an enigmatic artist who's been catapulted to fame. Told in the first person, the plot moves at a fast pace and I found it hard to put down, devouring it over a long weekend. Considering Cornwell's music biz background, I was surprised he chose not to write about music, but he clearly knows the machinations and politics of the art world very well. If not, then he certainly did his research. No hesitation in recommending this.

Fair to say that I bought this book out of curiousity, being a big Stranglers fan and also appreciating a lot of Hugh's solo music. They say the openings to a book are important, so Hugh must have done something right as I read the first 50 pages in no time.
You don't have to be an expert on the art world (IT MAY OR MAY NOT BE A DISADVANTAGE TO KNOW THAT WORLD) but we can generally understand greed, mean spiritedness, lust, envy, etc etc the classic ingredients for a good holiday read in fact. That is the best recommendation I can give this book. You could take it away with you and pass the hours away in the sun with something that zips you along in an entertaining way without getting bogged down. Small criticism is that the characters tend to be a little sparse in 'character' and you cannot really warm to them apart perhaps from Lawrence who dies overboard. Overall this is a very good debut novel and I look forward to the next one.

A real page turner
I read this book in two sittings! Set in the art world probably in the early 90s, it's a well written, gripping read.

Is there no limit to this man's talents ?!
It is regrettable that reviewer Mark W Dickson's enjoyment of Hugh Cornwell's first novel became marred by his search for what he considered to be discrepancies of plot. Read more

Read in a weekend.
I have to say , I bought this being a sad Stranglers fan, who once hero worshipped Mr Cornwell. But as with the previous review, I was pleasently surprised how much I enjoyed it. Read more
