A big book version of this wordless, visually compelling look at our changing environment, featured on a government reading list for schools. A mother and baby look through a window at a view of wilderness and sky as far as the eye can see. With each page, the boy grows and the scene changes. At first, in a clear patch of forest, a single house appears. A few years pass and there is a village in the distance. By the time the boy is twenty, the village has developed into a city. The young man gets married, has a child of his own and moves to the country, where father and child look through the window of their new home at the undeveloped wilderness outside. What a versatile book, one which the primary bookshelf should not be without. The life story of a boy is told through the view through his window and follows the changes to his surroundings. Having no text the book is accessible to all age groups and abilities, offering plenty of scope for discussion and inspiration in literacy, PHSE, geography and art work.
The pictures are interesting in their media as well as content and they almost leap out of the page at you!! Everytime I 'read' this book I am astounded at the number of new things which I discover in the pictures.

This is a superb book! The illustrations are based on collage and show the view from a bedroom window changing as the room's occupant grows up. Each illustration has many features which can be discussed with a wide age range, starting with very young children through to much older - 11 year olds or beyond. The pages are linked using birthday cards and other features. Outside the window, the environment is gradually spoilt by progress. Despite the fact that there are no words, strong emotions are involved.

I used this book in the classroom with Year 1 pupils- (it would have been even better as a Big Book.) The children were enthralled and the geographical and citizenship issues just flowed. I liked it so much that I now have a copy at home which my own children thoroughly enjoy.
