5.0 out of 5 stars Political thriller filled with suspense. 3 Aug 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The bestseller novel by Sidney Sheldon is translated into a thriller by an all star cast of Hollywood's finest. - Robert Wagner, Jaclyn Smith, Ian Mckellen, Christopher Cazenove. Set in the era of cold war and iron curtain rulers, this miniseries tells the story of the little known professor of political science at Kansas University - Mary Ashley and her nomination/ appointment to the post of ambassador of Romania. A nomination she initially rejected because she did not want to be separated from her husband Dr. Ashley, but when her husband is killed in suspicious circumstances, she is forced to reconsider and accepts the president's appointment. On arrival in Bucharest she is confronted by hostility from inside and outside forces with a plot to kill her and her two children and ensure the failure of the president's programme.

This is quite an intriguing movie, filled with suspense to the very end, nothing is what it seems and you are constantly left guessing who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. Good triumphs in the end. Though a political thriller, the movie was able to depict the triumph of the human spirit over adversity; that a good volition, honesty and determination can stand you in good stead to fulfil a position, even when all around you think you're a novice and doubt you.

This DVD is a region 2 Dutch import, plays in English and is subtitled in Dutch. There are no special features but the picture quality and audio are okay.

1.0 out of 5 stars plonk among vintage 15 Dec 2009
By Bart
Of all the films I reviewed on Amazon, I consider WOTG to be by far the worst. Stellar cast? Give over! The list of B-rated actors should have been a dead giveaway it would be low budget junk. Jaclyn Smith, Robert Wagner, Christopher Cazenove, Michael Moriarty and the rest of the rattling cast certainly did not do fine writer Sidney Sheldon proud. (Ian McKellan is the odd one out here. He stood out from the crowd. Why he chose to appear among many his inferior is beyond me. Strapped for cash, maybe?) Books by Sidney Sheldon are fun to read, packed with suspense in a fast paced plot and a cliffhanger ending each chapter. None of this had been incorporated in the predictable and rather coarse adaptation of the novel. The bombastic musical score and the low-fi soundtrack added to make watching WOTG a toe-cringing experience. The previous reviewer highlights the fact this is a Dutch release. If only he or she hadn't mentioned it! Now, I feel deeply ashamed for being part of a nation responsible for having turned out such utter rubbish :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Windmills Of The Gods 5 Mar 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Based on Sidney Sheldons' novel about a politcs lecturer, played by Jacquline Smith, in an Americal College who is asked to become the new U.S. ambassdor to Romania. She is intitally reluctant to accept the appointment, her husband a doctor does not want to give up his work in a hospital and when she does accept it is only because her family have been traumatised by the death of her husabnd in a mysterious car accident. She moves to Romania with her two children to take up the post of ambassador and has to overcome hostility from some of the embassy staff. She feels undermined by the character played by Robert Wagner who is her chief of staff at the embassy, but grows to trust him. Unfortunately she becomes very ill but recovers with the care of a French doctor from the French embassy, played by Christopher Cazenove, who is her love interest for a while until he is discovered to be part of a conspiracy to undermine American foreign policy in Eastern Europe in the 1980s. She finally learns why she became ill and who was repsonsible and realises that Robert Wagner is indeed her friend and protector. The political theme of the story surrounds a secret orgnaisation composed of mysterious and powerful figures from the West and East who wish to destroy any chance of political detente between the U.S. and Eastern Europe in the Cold War.

This is an excellent mini-series made in the late 1980s when mini series were in their heyday. Jacqueline Smith is absolutely beautiful in this story and there is definite chemistry between her character and Robert Wagner. Women will enjoy watching Jacqueline as her clothes with a few odd mistakes are really gorgeous. Sidney Sheldon's novels always read as if they were written for the screen and this story transfers very well to the small screen. The pace of the story never lags and it is recommended viewing.
