The critically acclaimed LYCANTHROPY announced the arrival of a prodigious talent in young Irish multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter Patrick Wolf. WIND IN THE WIRES, Wolf's sophomore release, builds on its predecessor by ratcheting up the quality and intensity of the songwriting. Wolf takes cues from the swirling gothic drama of Nick Cave, the dark-yet-danceable vibe of early-1980s acts like Echo & the Bunnymen and New Order, the lyrical confessionalism of Leonard Cohen,and the programmed intricacies of contemporary electronica.Yet while the influences are easy to identify, they are synthesized here into a unique, highly compelling form of chamber pop.
Wolf produces nearly every sound on WIND IN THE WIRES, playing violin, piano, ukulele, dulcimer, Farfisa, accordion, synthesizer, guitar, bass, and percussion, among other instruments, in addition to programming and singing. Whether on the driving opener, "The Libertine", with its swooping violin refrain, the cinematic title track, or the tremulous English folk of "Ghost Song", Wolf's consummate craftsmanship and fiery passion are on constant display. Wolf was only21 at the time of this strong album's release; it gives onechills to think of the potential this implies.

I always avoided the music of Patrick Wolf, dismissing it as trendy rubbish based on who I heard it from. This is a silly way to think and I'm glad I made up my own mind.

It starts off with the stunning 'The Libertine' which is an epic in itself with it's beautiful classical elements. While 'Wind in the Wires' is often quiet and slow burning taking inspiration from Jeff Buckley, it has it's moments of modern indie genius, such as 'Tristan'.

I will not say the album will change your life but take a glimpse into the world of Patrick Wolf and you may be suprised. This appeals to anyone with a taste for something different and if you're even considering this, you're heading in the right direction.

this album truly blew me away. the songs are just sublime and he's just so underrated! this is a really beautiful album - i hate to say this now but i do believe that it will be one of the most amazing albums of 2005. and i actually mean it. listen to any of the tracks (i recommend "lands end" and "railway house" in particular) and fall in love with him. i heard of him in the nme when he was asked to write a column about the libertine and what it means. this was quite recently, a week or so before he released his single. the column was something quite special and you could really tell that he really is the modern day bohemian, the care free nature loving 21 year old. listen to the xfm sessions and listen to his voice. he's going to support bloc party in october (ARGH I WISH I WAS GOING) and though everyone seems to love bloc party (which i do too, just not to the extent which everyone seems to rate them), just close your eyes and listen to the talent of this young man.

Artists like Bjork and bands like Sigur Ros make music inspired by landscape, in their cases the dramatic ehtereal beauty of Iceland. When listening to Patrick Wolf, I think of windswept fields, grey skies, power lines, bare trees, waves crashing against drizzly coastlines and pebble beaches. Essentially, I think of the British landscape. Therefore, it could be argued that Patrick is the British Bjork. Like Bjork, Patrick's music is innovative, challenging, genre bending and definately not for everyone. It's a mix of pastoral folk, experimental electronica and good old indie rock n' roll, mostly evident in his voice. He plays about fourteen different instruments in every single song, and he sings about absolutely everything, from the music business ("The Libertine" and "Lands End") to the plight of the countryside (Wind in the Wires: "This Wild electricity/made static by industry", a reference to unsightly wind turbines?)

One for rainy afternoons, dark drives through the country, contemplative late nights and for use in arguments against those who assert that music has stagnated and innovation no longer exists.
