This was one of the best books I had ever read as a child. It gripped me right from the very beginning and pulled you into a world of history and the battle between good and evil. Would recommend it to anyone. Simply Amazing.

This is a brilliantly written book - a time travel story about a family staying in an old house on the Northumbrian coast, who find an old boat that takes them back in time to the Farne islands at the time of St Cuthbert. It starts as a quirky, funny story about a dysfunctional family, but there is suspense, adventure, emotion there too. It was one of the earliest novels Westall wrote, soon after the Machine Gunners, and is one of his best.

This book is among the best I have ever read. A young boy, his family killed by a bomb blast, goes on the run with his dog and tries to survive in the harsh war-ridden world around him. No money, no food, no shelter - he has nothing to live on and no relatives to turn to.

This is beautifully written and has a fast pace which makes it impossible to put down, describing the realities of living at the time of the war in Britain. The ending is really tragic - not cheesy - just pure, unsentimental tragedy that will have you crying buckets.
