What's Not To Like? 2 Jan 2011
By Karen Joan - Published on Amazon.com
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As long as there have been computers, there have been ways to compress files. One of the earliest compression programs available to consumers was PKZip, named for its developer, Phil Katz, and "zip" for speed, as in Zip Code. The PKZip format is now celebrating its 22nd birthday and is easily the most popular compression technique for the average computer user. One reason for that is that Phil Katz released the process into the public domain and also allowed any file compression program to use the word ZIP in its own name.

Enter WINZIP. WINZIP was first released in 1991, 2 years after the release of PKZip. Developed and released by Nico Mak Computing (who later changed its name to WINZIP Computing), the product is now owned by Corel Corporation. This review covers WINZIP 1.0 for Mac OS X, Snow Leopard edition.

Installation is a breeze. I chose to let it run the setup wizard, which made it even simpler. Once done, it asks for your registration code. If you don't have one, then it lets you use the program for 45 days free of charge. As I understand, the program will continue to work after that time, but with reduced functionality. Since I have not had it installed for 45 days, I can't comment on what actually happens at that time.

Once installed, the program lurks until needed. Double-clicking on a zipped file opens it. Creating a new zip file is exceedingly fast. The first time I did it, I kept looking for the "ZIP IT NOW" button only to realize that it was automatic. The file was already sitting on my desktop. A nice little feature is the "Zip It, Mail It" feature that streamlines the process of compressing files and sending the resulting archive to a friend. It's not a big deal, but it's nice.

Apart from that, there's not much to say. WINZIP works, and it's easy. Zippity doo dah.

Very useful product 14 Jan 2011

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
With technology the way it is today it is difficult to get quality products, specifically for Mac. Thus when they are offered as in this excellent product by Corel the price is very steep. It is not necessary and not fair to buyers. That is why I give it 4 stars. Luckily Amazon offers the opportunity to shop third party sellers where you can get it for much less. What Winzip does it does well. All it says in the product description works great. You can save storage space and fit more on your hard drive. Up and downloading becomes much faster and the drag and drop function is a life saver. You can zip and encrypt emails and open compressed files. As I said all it does is great and with using this software many tasks on Mac are made easier. But the tasks are not rocket science and the high price is not necessary. Purchase this for a good price and you will be thrilled with its compatability and how day to day computer use on a Mac is made easier. But as a final note, software companies please offer better priced products for Mac.

Might be worthwhile for some users - it turns out not to be very useful for me 11 Jan 2011

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I had high hopes for this program - what I really wanted from it is to be able to compress video and picture files a bit more than the standard zipper that comes with the Mac operating system.

It turns out, it makes very little difference to the size of the files, compared to the compressor I already have (and you have, if you have a Mac running the OS that you need to run this program). It's not noticably faster either. (Even though this does a different kind of file compression than the kind you use to make video files smaller while retaining quality, you should expect that highly compressed video is not going to be compressed much further with WinZip - and that's what I saw: compressing raw video files tended to save some space, while compressing finished and compressed video files didn't make much of a difference).

Where it would be some advantage is if you had to compress a lot of files. Or if you needed to compress and encrypt them at the same time. Also, if you receive or download a lot of zipped files, you can use this to "peek" inside before uncompressing, and for some that might be a very useful feature.

What I do, mostly, is send and receive files from students and family, and I'm not all that worried about security, and for that the main issue is to be sure that the file is small enough that I can email it and they can receive it, or that I've got some kind of server set up where they can FTP it and then size isn't as much of an issue. So, as it turned out, I didn't find this to be all that useful for me.

I do like that it's an easy to use interface, and that it's been redesigned to look like a simple Mac application. I wouldn't recommend this to most users though - your average Mac user just doesn't need it, and I expect I'll rarely ever use it, and when I do it will be to accomplish something I could accomplish another way with maybe a few extra steps. It would probably only be useful for users who regularly receive zipped files, or zip and encrypt large quantities of files for something job-related.
