Product Description

Synopsis

Wim Crouwel is one of the better-known Dutch design icons. He is especially admired for his system design and for his creative handling of the shape of letters. In this book, Wim Crouwel himself, in conversations with art historian Kees Broos, explains in detail the reasons and methods of working that shaped his typefaces. The text is supported with many illustrations of Crouwel's designs and highlights hitherto untold stories behind his work.

To see what Wim Crouwel was doing with type in the 50s is amazing. Even today people are still discovering what this man had figured out years ago. A must see/read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grid and talent, 31 Dec 2007
By TEA - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Wim Crouwel Alphabets (Paperback)
A book about Wim Crouwel's fonts and typographic posters/cards. All text in his own Gridnik typeface. His typefaces are constructed on very logic and rational grounds but still have a strong personality and human dimension, they are more than just experimental. It would certainly be nice to see more about his work. (There are some interesting interviews with Wim Crouwel on You tube)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wim, 29 April 2008

Wim Crouwel... relatively unknown??!!

Maybe to someone living under a rock or quite frankly, someone who doesn't know anything about design.

Wim Crouwel is arguably the most influential Dutch designer of all time!!

4.0 out of 5 stars great experimental typography, 10 May 2004
By Derrick V Schultz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Wim Crouwel Alphabets (Paperback)
this book is a very interesting look at a relatively unknown typeface designer. he starts out using traditional fonts (akzidenz, Helvetica) and now creates fonts based on matrices and pixels. beyond that, his interview explains why he did things the way he did.

a great book for anybody interested in typefaces and typographic layouts. the book layout is itself a little weird (strange margin sixes...) but overall is very clean and very effective.
