5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious! A must read ! 20 May 2002
By A Customer
It doesn't happen often that I have to laugh out loud reading a book but when I first read this one (on a long flight from London to San Diego) after the very first pages I was laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face. I guess my reading then made a few Tom Sharpe fans, as my fellow travelers wanted to know the name of the book that inspired such a high mood in a tedious intercontinental flight. The book is masterly written, one never knows when outrageously funny parts make an appearance, sometimes in an escalade, other times there are apparently innocent actions culminating in unexpected comic brilliance. Henry Wilt, a Fenland Tech English lecturer is an ordinary man with a propensity to glide into bizarre and just insanely funny situations and misunderstandings. His hefty wife, Eva, is scatterbrained, illogical, prude and a force of nature! Wilt genius acerbic quads... are rip roaring funny ! Even after having read the book lots of times there are pieces like Dr. Board sarcastic comments when they dug out Judy, the inflatable doll, that still make me cry copiously...
This book is definitely my favourite although Indecent Exposure and Riotous Assembly droll, mordant, side-splitting, scathing humor and barbed pokes about former apartheid situation in South Africa come a very close second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Sharpe comic genious. 8 Mar 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The late Tom Sharpe had a wonderful sense of the absurd and farce. People probably either love or hate him and I am in the former camp. Worth every penny.

This may be an old book but it is still as funny as when I read it a long time ago. Definitely a book to cheer you up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book if you have big hands! 7 Jan 2013
By John Lucas Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the stories tremendously but the book itself is pretty large! I like to read on the subway and it's too big for that. Your hands would prefer three smaller books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big book 12 Mar 2011
By Dmitry, NYC - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have read this book in Russian and always wanted to read the original. Well... The book was fine. Just too big. I didn't expect that. So thick it was uncomfortable for me to hold, and I didn't enjoy reading it. Weird, right? I would never expect to give a review like this, but that what really happened. After a few evenings of trying to start reading it I stuck on page 20 and through it in the recycle bin one morning.
Good book, but get it in different shape. Don't be greedy like me, don't order "3 in 1".
