Product Description

Product Description

This classic of the English countryside, . first published in 1908, is a favourite with readers of all ages. As the late Margery Fisher wrote, 'Adults are sadly aware of the figure of Grahame himself, languishing in a city office and longing for the river: children respond to the fun, the anarchy of Toad and the entrancing detail as Grahame's son Alastair must have done when he listened to the bedside stories that became a book. ' The author invited Arthur Rackham to illustrate his book, but Rackham said he was too busy - a decision he was happily able to reconsider in 1936 when he was approached by the American publisher of the Limited Editions Club. The project, which he carried out with love and great care for the authenticity of detail, was his last: the drawings appeared first in the USA in 1939 and in Britian in 1950.

Pure magic ! 23 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
I sent this book as a birthday present to my young grand-daughter in Australia, because I knew she loved animals, and I wanted something which would delight her. Recalling my own pleasure, as a small boy, when the story had been read to me,I knew she would enjoy it.

Whether the child is eight, or one in spirit at eighty, this book must enchant. Parts of it, as the encounter with Pan and the young badger, are incredibly beautiful.

I cannot recommend this book too highly.

A Quality Publication 10 Aug 2010
By Michael F. Freer VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Of all the publications of this classic work I like this the best. The book is of a size that is comfortable to handle and the hard cover, with pasted on Rackham print, oozes quality. With Rackham sketches to head each chapter and twelve colour prints, the theme for the book is complete. At the bargain price on offer this is surely a must for anyone, young or old, who wants a copy of Kenneth Grahame's enchanting masterpiece.

What could possibly make a better children’s story? Animals and a stirring adventure to win back something that has been taken from them. Grahame makes the characters of Mole and co. so vivid you can see them incredibly clearly getting up to their picnics and battles. The characters have even been said to represent different social strata- Mole being timid, house proud and middle class- Rat’s good humour and lack of fuss the archetypal working class man- Toad of Toad Hall the arrogant but good hearted aristocrat- and Badger the wise hermit. Grahame didn’t write them to be assigned that way but it is testament to his skill as an author that they are seen so differently. Toad’s exploits in numerous motorcars are what causes most of the humour in the book and the turn of the century light hearted, newness is bright and refreshing. There is a sense of mysticism that is not used in the many film and play adaptations and talk of an “animal code” so for those who have just seen an adaptation of the book there is plenty more story inside the novel to keep Willow fans happy.
