There aren't that many people performing Western Swing these days - the music of Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb and Hank Thompson - but Asleep at The Wheel have probably done more than any other artistes to preserve the spirit of the genre over the past 40 years. As they say, "Western Swing ain't dead, it's just Asleep At The Wheel".

Willie Nelson loves to collaborate with other performers and if he'd ever had the chance to perform with Bob, Ernest or Hank I'm sure he would have jumped at the idea. He's no stranger to Western Swing so a collaboration with The Wheel is about as good a tribute to the genre as it's possible to get today.

There is a joyous blend of fiddle, piano, mandolin, guitars, clarinet, bass and brass making music that shouts out "party time". You can just detect Willie's voice sounding a little frayed but that is entirely in keeping with these venerable Western Swing classics. There's no competition, just Willie and The Wheel sounding as though they were born to make music together, which they probably were.

The sound of Western Swing has been updated a little here, but this is still the authentic sound of singer and musicians having a fine old time preserving the music of a generation that has almost gone.

You can't help listening to this without a smile creeping across your face. A fine tribute from Willie Nelson singing along to the western swing sound pumped out by Asleep at the Wheel. It's an infectious tribute to music from those earlier, possibly more innocent times, and done with a tremendous sense of fun and respect for the original music and the composers who penned the material.

Such collaborations between artists who don't regularly work together can be a mixed bag, but for anyone who enjoys such endeavours, this is not to be missed. Fans of feel good music from the likes of the Travellin Wilburys won't be disappointed - individual egos are put to one side for the benefits of the music in general; and there simply isn't a bad track on offer here. Music like this may not change the world, but it certainly leaves it a better place. Superb fun.
