It's not often these days that an artist sticks to his guns, and plays music he or she likes regardless of the popularity in the mainstream. Many have been drawn in by the money, the fame and the celebrity lifestyle, and the music they were founded from and that created their musical careers have been forgotten. This cannot be said for William Orbit, who, not only keeps creating music that he enjoys, rather than what the mainstream wants, but also creates compilation albums such as this which reflect his taste in music.
These days, it's a brave and unusual occurrence in a world of musical "reality" TV shows. Many musicians I'm sure will admire this concept, and I am delighted for any artist who, as coined, "sticks to his guns" when it comes to music.
So as not to contradict my 3-star rating, so to the album itself. CD1 is excellent - very chilled and ambient, with a few more 'upbeat' tracks to flesh out the album into something more interesting. An album with relatively mainstream stayaways suddenly brings up a track by All Saints, which may seems random - well, it is random - but somehow it works. I love chillout music in most forms, so it's not surprising that I'm a fan of CD1.
However, CDs 2 and 3 do not do it for me, which, given my earlier comments about admiration and refreshment, is a shame. I'm not exactly sure what sort of music it is - downtempo maybe? Whatever it is, it simply isn't my style, and nothing on either album leapt out at me. This I'm sure is just my taste though, and given than I love CD1 but not the others suggests that there is a decent amount of variation within the album as a whole.
I was longing to love the whole album, because today it is very refreshing to discover an artist who doesn't care about the mainstream, but rather reflects a journey personal to him. This album is his offering to us to join him.
Try it, you might like all of it - even if I didn't.
