This is an excellent double CD - yet another in Virgin's wonderful series reissuing great recordings of the last 25 years or so. Lawes was active from around 1620-1640 and his viol consort setts are some of the finest music composed during this period. They are full of beauty, interest and melodic and harmonic invention - indeed there are some genuine surprises in places. The music is a real pleasure and I think it deserves wider recognition.
Fretwork play this music superbly. They have established themselves as one of the world's finest Early Music ensembles over the last 20-odd years and certainly live up to that reputation on these discs. They bring skill, delicacy, richness and emotion to this music and make the whole double CD a delight from beginning to end.
This is a set which will give pleasure for many years, and I recommend it in the warmest terms
