Be aware this is the 2011 second edition being sold by Amazon, not the collectable first edition. The book on sale was not printed July 2010 as suggested by the information Amazon gives on this page. So buy because you like Eggleston pictures. This is a collection of 'B-Sides', lesser known images selected by documentary film-maker Almereyda. The director made "William Eggleston in the Real World". If you know Eggleston's work, you'll know what to expect. A cheaper entry to his ideas is "William Eggleston's Guide", if you like that, you'll love this book. I also recommend you try his "Before Color" book first. As three books they show his first images, first major show, and then the overlooked photos. He's a photographers photographer, meaning those new to photography may find incomprehensible. One thing I like about his images is the ambivalent feelings it produces. You'll come back to his work time and again, as your opinions change every time you look at them. If you've loved Martin Parrs work, then Eggleston is a good place to try next. Also recommend Saul Leiter, Peter Fraser, and Paul Seawright for colour work. Stephen Shores "American Surfaces" is a good companion book.
Eggleston fans will enjoy the gaps filled and making connections with more well know images and the documentary films about him. The print quality is very good and worth the asking price. This edition will probably sell out, 'limited' to 3000 copies. It's not a financial investment, but an intellectual one.
