The idea of a midwife and single mother who meets a recently widowed undertaker with two girls through a dating agency must the most fertile ideas for a light drama series ever to have occured to anyone. And this first series really made the most of it. The second series was almost as good and the third series still worth watching.
The perfect cast seems to have been put together for this heart warming romantic comedy and in particular as far as I am concerned it had the advantage of the wonderful Julie Graham as the feisty Scottish midwife. I could watch her in anything and am currently watching her in 'Survivors'.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a drama series on TV more than this. She brings people into the world and he sees them out of it with great humanity. It's perfect.
The great thing about the concept is that it allows the various episodes to show the two leads helping people through their respective professions. It's fairly easy to imagine how the midwife does this but what is really intriguing is the way that the undertaker who is a genuinely good man is also given the opportunity to be of great help to people in various kinds of need. William is a very valuable addition to the rather sparse literature of the 'Good Man' especially intelligent good men. It is also I think to be welcomed that he belongs to the profession of Undertaker. If I were an undertaker I would be very pleased. I just hope that in reality they are not closer to the caricature. In any case this should at least encourage them to take a high moral pride in their profession.

I'm hooked. The characters are endearing and the contrast of birth and death is often riveting. You won't be disappointed.

Fantastic example of British comedy. Martin Clunes at his best. Not anything like his character in Doc Martin. A very different side of his acting ability. He actually smiles.
