The Willesden Herald Short story prize is obviously one of the stronger competitions out there because there are no obviously weak selections in this anthology. Carys Davies effortlessly takes the reader from Birmingham to Siberia in a single paragraph in "The Travellers" and Jo Lloyd's tale "Work" encapsulates the daily grind of lowly kitchen hand - although very little happens and I completely forgot about the story ten minutes after reading it. "The Hate Gang", Ben Cheetham's tale of a child gang's prank gone wrong is touching and the others are all pretty well written.
My only gripe is that it contains - as does every single prize anthology I've ever read - a couple of stories featuring suicide and trerminal illness. Yawn!
Oh, and it's the dullest cover I've ever seen on a book.
Recommended if you're a keen reader of short stories.
