Book Description

6 Jan 2006 0300105819 978-0300105810
Willem Drost was one of Rembrandt's most gifted pupils, and he is also considered one of the most mysterious. This book, the first ever devoted to this exceptional artist, unravels many of the mysteries of Drost's life and career. Curator and art historian Jonathan Bikker offers not only new archival evidence of the artist's date and place of death but also a new assessment of Drost's place in the Rembrandt workshop and in the Venetian art world of the mid-seventeenth century. Drost emerges as one of Rembrandt's most talented imitators and, despite his short career, an artist with a variety of faces. The book features a meticulously researched and fully illustrated catalogue raisonne with 38 paintings now attributed to Drost (several formerly attributed to Rembrandt) and 35 other paintings today known only from old sale catalogues or reproductions. The author also discusses 32 paintings he rejects as Drost's work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Black and white images... 3 May 2013

It's interesting to see work by one of Rembrandt's better pupils, and the work itself doesn't disappoint, but the images contained in this volume leave something to be desired. The book is primarily text, containing many small (quarter page) images inserted into the biographical data, etc. There are a number of full page images (full page with white border- not full bleed), but the vast majority of the images here are black and white and small. To the book's defense, this is just due to the rarity of the work; they aren't easy to photograph if you can't stand in front of them. But for art books nowadays, these images just don't satisfy.

And for full disclosure, I purchased the book from Amazon and it arrived damaged. Their customer service was great, as usual, and they promptly processed the return. However, that being the case, I didn't actually read the book. I thumbed through it a couple times and skimmed a few of the essays. So, I can't review the text (which is the bulk of the book). But I stand by my criticism of the images.

This is one of the best books on Willem Drost that I've encountered. The text is informative and the color pictures are breathtaking. This is a definite must-have for any lover of Dutch painting or for anyone interested in pupils of Rembrandt!
