So what's New?, 20 Oct 2005

This review is from: Will Young: The Biography (Hardcover)
This unauthorised book is a pleasant enough read, but for the fans of Will Young there is nothing in it that hasn't been seen before. Almost all the information appears to be rehashed information from magazines and newspapers as well as liberal poaching from Will's own (authorised!!) books and large helpings from Will's fansites' message boards.
For the casual fan who may not follow Will's daily activities this book may prove to be quite interesting, but the die hards will probably feel they could have done a better job themselves.

All You Want To Know?, 23 Feb 2009
This review is from: Will Young: The Biography (Hardcover)
This is a feelgood book in many ways, directed at Will Young's fans, and nothing wrong in that.
It is heavy on detail about the Pop Idol contest and its immediate aftermath in 2002, filling most of the first half of the book once essential early biographic detail has been dealt with.
The second half details events to 2005 and is unstinting in its praise of Will Young as singer, dancer, actor and general all-round entertainer.
As with many unauthorised biographies, it draws on other sources rather than the principal. It is a great read, but becomes a little unsatisfactory in its lack of critical depth.
This becomes more apparent when compared to a hearing of Will Young's first album. The book says this was completed with Will's creative input and that he shared in the major decisions about its content. Yet the album numbers among its tracks at least five which are heavily heterosexual in content and which, in style, ring untrue with the singer's other work. The album sounds like it conceived for a particular type of male singer (one hesitates to say one PARTICULAR singer) and contradicts the official line quoted by the biography.
This gives the impression of the book being a sanitised crowd pleaser and explains its saccharine feel. Still, not a bad read at all. The style is easy and informative, telling you just the sort of things you'd like to hear about Will Young.
