Product Description

Product Description

Sir Alan Parker wrote and directed his first feature film in 1975, Bugsy Malone. Fourteen films and three decades later he is preparing his next project. Known for his acidic wit and uncompromising approach to film making, Parker has often resorted to humour in cartoons, to get his view across. Studio heads, actors and crew, all come under Parker's merciless pen. However, and often to Parker's surprise, the recipient enjoyed the message and framed it. Many of the director's doodles, drawings and sketches adorn the walls of actors, producers, directors and movie executives around the world, often taking pride of place, next to the all-smiling premiere or award-winning photographs. This unique collection contains over 200 mini masterpieces from Sir Alan Parker who Will Write and Direct for Food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prententious folk need not buy this, 5 Dec 2005

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Will Write and Direct for Food (Paperback)

One of the delights of this very funny book is that Alan Parker is no cartoonist, he's a movie director who happens to have a wonderful offbeat sense of humour who can scribble. If he was a cartoonist I expect this book would look rather predictable, each cartoon centred on the page with an italic caption below. As it is the book is an exuberant collection of Parker's work (which looks like, depending on the joke, bits of Thurber, B O Blechman or Robert Osborn) produced on scraps of paper, exercise books, memos, collages, old engravings, water colors and anything else that he found with an empty space to draw on.

Predictably most of the fun is a swipe at the Hollywood movie biz (richly deserved of course) and Parker being an outsider enables him to spot the absurdity and ramshackle nature of the folk who live and work there. If you survive in that milieu, or perhaps aspire to, browsing through this book will be as essential as that first drink after a hard day at the celluloid frontline.

Brilliant, poignant cartoons, written and devised by a Alan Parker, film-maker and acute observer of all aspects the sometimes VERY frustrating film industry! Love it! Stephen Fry said in the foreward buy three copies, no... I say buy 10 and mail along with your script submissions
