I hope it won't be as noisy as the PS3 or Xbox 360.
The fan on the Wii is almost silent though the DVD spinning is loud enough to be heard over moderate television volume, however some discs seem to go quiet after a short while, The Last Story spins fairly loudly then after about half an hour the disc spin noise stops though I can feel it still spinning, it must slow down after a while for some reason.
So, with the more powerful CPU and GPU will the Wii U need some unavoidable noisy cooling or will it be possible for Nintendo to engineer some almost silent fans?
Well, here's hoping for a quiet fan and disc drive.
The fan on the Wii U is only slightly larger than that of the Wii, maybe 25% bigger. Plus it has a combined GPU on the same chip as the CPU so it shouldnt require any additional fans inside the unit (except possibly an extractor fan to keep dust out). As for the disc drive its gunna be hard to tell. Its slot loading so may be louder as it will have to hold the disc in place, instead of having a tray for it to sit on. A lot of guess work really but seeing the internals of the console, it looks as though it will be well constructed so shouldnt create too much noise. Hard to tell until you play one in a quiet environment! Components/pics inside the console below. http://wiiublog.com/this-is-a-transparent-wii-u-and-was-the-wii-u-supposed-to-come-out-a-lot-earlier/
Like the 360 and ps3 the discs will have to spin at quite a considerable speed to keep the large amounts of data flowing and that should contribute most of the increase (if any) in noise. In the end i think it comes down to the quality of parts used. The old 360's were much louder than the newer ones so improvements were made there.
Mine came yesterday. The fan is audible, some would say it is quiet or barely audible, but if you are sensitive to fan noise you will notice it. It isn't as loud as the fan in the Xbox slim or the Xbox slim's power supply and it hasn't yet speeded up and got louder like the fan on the PS3 does.
The big let down is the loud disc spinning sound coming from the disc drive, very disappointing. This could be overcome by downloading games but they tend to be more expensive than disc retail games and can't be sold on.
Hello, you will not be able to hear the fan at all, but, the disc drive is a bit noisy, and consider that the disc doesn't stop spinning, even when you're not playing the game. The 360 slim and ps3 are both less noisy as you could install the games to hard drive. Not possible with Wii U
Hello again, I bought recently a ps3 slim, I can confirm the noise on the wiiU to be on the same levels, maybe slightly less. Still, the wiiU without any game installations and the console stays cooler. The noise on all this consoles comes from the disc spinning.
