Wilfred Gordon Macdonald Partridge ( age not very old) lives next door to old people's home. His visits enable him to share in the likelable quirks of the residents and he develops a particular fondness for Miss Nancy who is a tad dotty and has lost her memory. Therein ensues Wilfred's search for the meaning of memory. Asking the other residents, Wilfred is provided with an array of answers that illustrate the diversity and richness of human life and what is important to people. Owing to his tender years, Wilfred searches out concrete examples of the qualities people have described, warmth, humour, preciousness which he eagerly presents to Miss Nancy to replace her lost memory and low and behold, the objects young Wilfred has collected prompt Miss Nancy to remember things from her own childhood. A story about not giving up, sharing and how the simple things in life can sometimes make all the difference

This is the most delightful and touching book to read to children and for adults. Mem Fox has used her brilliant command of language to draw the reader into an intimate relationship between the very young and the very old. Wilfred Gordon's innocent understanding of the world touches deep into the recesses of an old woman's mind and brings joy and understanding to them both. Julie Vivas' illustrations reflect and amplify the humour and poignancy of the text. A true masterpiece.
