More About the Author

Alan MacDonald was born in Watford and now lives a stone's throw from the River Trent in Nottingham. After several years in a travelling theatre company, he turned full time to writing in 1990 since when he has published over seventy books for children.

He has written picture books and non-fiction but is probably best known for his comic fiction for younger readers. Recent successful series include Troll Trouble (Bloomsbury) which was optioned for film by Twentieth Century Fox.

Working with award winning illustrator David Roberts, he created the Dirty Bertie books (featuring the world's grubbiest trouble magnet) - which have sold all over the world and number over a dozen books in the series.

When not busy with books, Alan writes for children's TV, working on many popular series such as Horrid Henry, The Tweenies, Boo! and Fimbles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming story.... 20 Sep 2006
By Addie - Published on
Yes-this book is not written by the original author of the Brambly Hedge series. The purists may hate that, but it is still a charming story. I love the original series, but this book is designed better in two ways. One is that the illustrations are larger, so all of those wonderful details can be seen better from afar. Secondly, the wording is more concise. These two differences make this book more accessable for both younger children and storytelling groups. I hope that the originals will be republished in a larger format, like this one, someday.

3.0 out of 5 stars Our first Brambly Hedge book 7 Aug 2008
By Mabel - Published on

This is the first Brambly Hedge book for us. I read such wonderful things about the classic series but was a bit disappointed in this latest addition.
There is a very brief introduction to everyone and how they relate to each other. Then the story jumps right into the Hide and Squeak game. My 5 year lost track of who was who and never connected with the characters. He barely cared that baby Sissy was floating away. He's very much into heroes these days and he did like the part where Wildred found Sissy.
I'm looking forward to reading the original Jill Barklem books with him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many characters 11 Sep 2007
By Two Kids No Time - Published on
The book is cute, but there are too many characters. I got confused as to who was who- they are all dressed similarly and I wasn't sure if they were all voles or what. If I am confused, imagine my 3 year old. I also didn't like the fact that they accused Sissy of taking a boat when they had all been playing hide and go "squeak" together....
