Book Description

14 Nov 2013

Of all the poets of the First World War, Wilfred Owen most fires the imagination today. This biography is more than a simple account of his life - the childhood spent in the backstreets of Birkenhead and Shrewsbury, the appalling months in the trenches - it is a poet's enquiry into the workings of a poet's mind.

This paperback reproduces all the widely praised illustrations of the original edition, including drawings by the poet and facsimile manuscripts of many of his greatest poems. As 'a portrait of the artist', the book has proved, as the Scotsman predicted, 'indispensable to any student of Wilfred Owen's life and work'.

Called by Graham Greene 'surely one of the finest biographies of our time', Wilfred Owen won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W.H. Smith & Son Literary Award, and the E.M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In its use of verse manuscripts to reveal the working of the creative imagination, it inaugurated a new form of literary biography. This edition is revised and updated and includes a new preface by the author.

Product Description

"One of the finest biographies of our time." (Graham Greene)

"An outstanding book, a worthy memorial to its subject." (Kingsley Amis Observer)

"An excellent book, not a critical study but a biography that shows unobtrusive critical acumen as well as deep imaginative understanding. It is as lovingly detailed as the records of Owen's short life permit, but it is always fascinatingly readable, in fact engrossing." (John Lehmann Sunday Telegraph)

"This stunning work of non-fiction is a moving tribute to one of the giants of 20th century literature and deserves your immediate attention." (UK Press Syndication)

"Indispensable to any student of Wilfred Owen's life and work." (Scotsman)

Lovely, well researched biography, with good and full information from childhood to death. Numerous photographs also accompany the text. It contains many useful quotes from Wilfred Owen's younger brother, as well as poems and excerps from letters by Wilfred Owen. The volume is finished off beautifully with an amazing afterward.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great poet 16 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was introduced to Wilfred Owen's poetry many years ago by a colleague who used to recite as a 'party piece' the poem 'Dulce et Decorum est' - and I never failed to be moved by the words. Over the years I have often used Owen's poetry in talks, addresses, presentations, readings and sermons. Once, as a young curate, I used 'Parable of the Old Men and the Young' at a Remembrance Day Service; after I had finished there was a seemingly eternal silence, before a Second World War veteran came up to me and grabbed my hand and said, "Thank God someone has had the guts to say it how it was."
Although I read the more recent biography by Dominic Hibberd, I found it dry and lacking in soul, this biography though is first rate. I appreciate this is a reprint, but nevertheless Jon Stallworthy's book stands as a great biography and both concisely written and very lively to read.
This reprint is well presented and a sturdy book to hold, read from and keep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilfred Owen Biography 5 April 2011
By Turbo
This was purchased for my wife (it was a used item as there were no new ones and it was as good as new). She has not had her head out of it since I bought it and I think she is now reading it for the second time, she has told me he was a very interesting gentleman and it was a present she is delighted with.
