This book is wonderful- simple illustrations, packed with little tidbits and trivia. Everything from how to make a snare to how to make your own mocassins. It gives its treasure up with a sense of respect and wonder for the natural world.
I remember this book fondly from my childhood- and recall how valued it was by my mountain-man/ trapper grandfather.
If you love the woods, are interested in arts and crafts, have an interest in history and lifestyle of the Native Americans, if you hunt, fish, trap, if you like to camp or just yearn for a simpler more self-sufficient time, buy this book. It is a journey into the past with suprising usefulness even now.

The book contains everything that you could want to know about how to not only survive, but flourish with only very basic equipment and a willingness to work. It contains many useful diagrams and explanations as to why things are done in particular ways (rather than just stating that they are, is the case with many works of this type) and is invaluable not only to those who wish to know more about living outdoors, but also to those who want to know how things were done in the past.

This book is a reprint of a much earlier work and so contains some words and illustrations that might jar with the modern reader but that were acceptable when it was written. It must therefore be taken for what it is, a product of its time and not a modern work written for those with modern sensibilities. The writer has also assumed a certain level of intelligence and everything that that entails.

The book was written for those living in America and so concentrates on American Fauna and flora, so attempting to apply of all its teachings rigorously in other countries could lead you astray. That said, the amount of useful information in it overwhelms any limitations that the book might have. This is a book that I would recommend to others.

A nice book 4 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
Written in 1945 but relevant today. An enjoyable book with quirky illustartions. Lots of useful tips and tricks although written for the American reader.
