This story pre-dates thecurrent obession with vampires, werewolves etc, and deserves to be better known. Farfetched? Yes, but it's scarily plausible! Frances Gordon paints a vivid picture of the wildwood itself, and when reading this book at twilight, I found myself looking round for wolves... The book features strong characters, particularly Felicity, who despite finding herself in the most difficult situation, manages to start a whole new life for herself and her daughter. It's well written, as I've come to expect from this author, and keeps the reader's interest right to the end. For me, the only jarring note is Briony's red cloak - it just struck me as a little contrived. If you like to be pleasurably frightened, then this is the book for you.
