Book Description

1 April 2006
From Pocket Mountains, the publisher of Scotland's bestselling walking and cycling guides, come two beautifully illustrated books that explore the diversity of Scotland's wildlife and the habitats that sustain it. Each book contains not only the information you need to identify where to go and when for the best chance of glimpsing red kites and corncrake, pine marten and bottle-nosed dolphin but also enriches the wildlife lover's understanding and appreciation of the landscape that sustains these and many other species. "Wildlife Traveller: Scottish Mainland" accompanies you on a journey that begins with the sea cliffs, mudflats and saltmarshes of Southern Scotland, travelling north through farm and woodland to Fife and Angus, the peaks and glens of the Highlands, and Grampian and the Far North. Researched and written by wildlife journalist and photographer, Richard Rowe, this book is a must for anyone who loves Scotland and its wildlife. This series also contains "Wildlife Traveller: Scottish Islands".

This is a beautifully put together book - concise and great photography. In fact both books are of extremely good quality and are more about helping you on your way, rather than a banging you over the head with the author's perceived, and a lot of the time, bumptious knowledge.

These books are enjoyable and readable - giving the right amount of information and knowledge, whilst leaving you to research your own, rather than being tainted by the author's own agenda.

Guide that is small enough to stick in your rucksack while you explore the locations described in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment 7 Aug 2010
By GeeBee
Format:Paperback
First of all I would describe this book as paperback rather than hardback as advertised by Amazon.

However on to the content. I agree with most of the comments by most of the reviewers. I agree with what the positive ones say with regard to the photography and as a companion to lead one to one's own investigations, while I would also agree with the criticisms of the negative ones and in particular that most of the information is readily avaialable elsewhere. However the main issue for me was that nowhere in the information provided by Amazon, or in the reviews I read prior to purchase, was the format of the book clear to me. I am therefore adding my review to make sure other potential purchasers are aware of the format.

The book is actually a series of thumbnails about (with a very few exceptions) various selected organised nature reserves in Scotland (eg RSPB, WWT, SWT, Scottish Natural Heritage etc), indicating location and access and details of what to expect in each of the reserves when you get there. These are referenced by region and there is no overall contents page - there is a separate contents at the start of each region which you have to search for. There is an index of the referenced wildlife at the back. It is good in its way, and if this is what you want then buy it, but it is not what I wanted.

I was hoping for a book organised by the actual wildlife, with details of habitat for each, and generalised locations indicating where such wildlife might be seen (not just organised reserves about which I already have reasonably extensive knowledge as a member of some of the relevant organisations and about which it is easy to find information on the internet), hence my disappointment.
