Review

"This is a very useful book and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to southern Africa to observe wildlife. Study it before you leave on safari, or just purchase it and take an armchair safari that will cost a lot less!"--DRK, Wildlife Activist

"This book is clearly directed to tourist photographers, but may well be of interest to academic and public libraries."--Frederic F. Burchsted, American Reference Books Annual

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy Take-along Safari Book 5 Mar 2012
By steveb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have many of the more detailed animal books and guides, but because of their size and weight leave them at home as reference material. This book, owing to both its compact size and low weight, is ideal as a practical take-along guide. It's likely to contain just about everything you'll see on safari. Animals are pictured and, alongside, text is given describing the animal. Perfect for my purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously Useful 9 Aug 2013
By Peggy - Published on Amazon.com

This small guide went with me everywhere for the two weeks I was in South Africa. The Afrikaans names were great for my SA friends to quickly look up birds and animals. I had a bigger bird book that I realized I could leave behind. I wrote in it the date and location I spotted each animal or the second spotting. It was amazing to see it fill up. I had done some studying before we left and wish I had done more as the bird types are so very different. I found the organization to be very logical and easy to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for a pocket guide 10 Mar 2013
By Tammy McGee - Published on Amazon.com

I brought this book with me on safari in Botswana. For mammals, it was fantastic! If you're looking for birds, it was fairly good, but I would suggest getting a separate bird guide as there are SO many birds. If you're interested in reptiles or insects, this wouldn't be the book for you; there is very little info on them in here. Overall though, it was a very good guide - I liked that there was at least one picture of each animal it described and pointed out slight differences that differentiate between similar species. The layout of the book was good and it was easy to find what you're looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great field guide for the area 16 Dec 2012
By Hyo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought this just before our trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Had every bird and mammal listed, in one guide. Only things that keep it from being 5 stars are 1) no range maps and 2) I found a book in South Africa (not as good) that included the names of the animals in several languages (Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa), which was cool. Otherwise, probably the best single book of its kind.
3.0 out of 5 stars For the birds 10 Jun 2014

If you are crazy for birds, you will love this. The rest of the critters make up a relatively small portion of this book. You can use it as a safari guide but there may be better ones out there.
