Book Description

1 May 2007 Wildlife Trusts
With around 200,000 garden ponds in the Greater London area alone, ponds are one of the most appealing and vibrant small-scale wildlife habitats. Almost one in ten British gardens actually have a pond and it is seen as a growth area both by garden centres and conservation organizations alike. With this book wildlife and garden enthusiasts can discover and explore the world of ponds: from bugs, beetles and dragonflies, to frogs, newts, birds and bats. It offers clear step-by-step instructions on how to plan, design, site and build small and large ponds for wildlife and is full of suggestions on how to encourage different plants and animals. Also included are details on a wide variety of plants, tips on how to maintain your pond through the seasons and clear, annotated diagrams on its construction.

A fantastic book with loads of great illustrations. It supplies you with all the information that you need to create a wildlife haven in your garden. Unlike some books, this appears to be written by an expert in her field with an in-depth knowledge of the native species required to keep an ecosystem in a balanced healthy condition. A must for all those people who wish to create a sustainable wildlife pond that is healthy and long-lived, and not just a pretty quick fix as many books illustrate.

A joy to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars The wildlife pond handbook 30 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Very attractive book with many large, full colour, illustrations. Quite a lot of pages devoted to descriptions of insects and other pondlife and their life-cycles. Although this was interesting, it was a large part of the book and I would have preferred to have more detailed information on the practicalities of dealing with problems in ponds and pond maintenance. I would describe this as a book for someone dreaming about having a wildlife pond in the future, rather than one for someone who has just inherited a big, smelly garden pond with nothing much in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value, but off topic 14 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
With a RRP of £10.00 the £1.99 Amazon charge is of excellent value for a book of 80 pages including colour photos.

However as others have mentioned there is not many pages dedicated on how to build your pond and looking after it.The majority is taken up with what types of wildlife visits gardens and ponds, how to build bat boxes, etc.

No explanation on laying underlay despite a photo,or what different types of liner or underlay there are. Also no information on other ways/ materials to build a pond.

Still its a good general nature read more adapt at explaining wildlife in your garden, and how to attract.
